#inhighschool: What Was Your High School Dream

 Hawk082810_08.jpg

The trending topic today on Twitter (besides the sponsored one) is #inhighschool. You get the gist: in high school ______ and you fill in the blank with something relevant to your interests.

So here we're going to apply the #inhighschool theme to cars.

In high school -- barring the exotics we all wanted -- what car did you REALLY want.

Me? Firebird Firehawk...Shutup...it was awesome. I still want one. With the LT4 as pictured above. Only 29 made. Awesome.

(photo from LT1.net  -- go there for more Firehawk.)

#inhighschool I was a complete and utter Porsche freak. My dream car was a 1972 911S 2.4 non-sunroof coupe.

340 Cuda or Challenger. They were less the 10 years old then, easy to find and you could buy one in good shape for 2 or 3 grand.

Always wanted to, never did.

The brand new 2004 Subaru STi... and now I have one. :)

A 2002 Chevrolet Camaro SS. In my eyes, it looked fast but not too gimmicky, and it WAS fast, which is even better.

I also wanted a 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo. I test drove one with my dad, who had been a prototype driver for BMW, and he drove the hell out of the car. When we got out, we were laughing so hard practically drunk off the speed and handling. My mom balked at the fact that it was so fast, and that it had an oil leak, but it was only $2500. When my dad and I finally talked her into it the next day, the car was sold. I still want one!

a_pip +1! While 1994 was quite a bit after I graduated, that's one of my all-time favorite cars.

I'm almost embarrassed to say, but I didn't have a high school fantasy car because I was driving one. In my senior year, my parents bought a 1965 Mustang convertible for me, black on black with a tan top. I sure had a lot of fun lunch dates with that car! Drove it daily for eight years, but I finally couldn't take the abuse anymore. I have a lot of stories about that car, most of them bad. But anyway...

It looked very much like this:

Regrettably, I had the unfortunate pleasure to have been born in the late 80s…High school cars that were popular were anything that you could bolt an ugly body kit to. I’m getting a headache just thinking of all the scoops, side skirts, bondo and wings that classmates would bolt, screw, and superglue onto their lowly Honda civics and Ford Contours. Not to mention the giant tach-gauges with shift lights in automatic cars.

Though my generation wasn’t the most car-savvy or tasteful automobile aficionados, I’d have to say there were a lot of cool affordable sports cars the Acura Integra and early Toyota Supra defiantly topped my list. The early Prelude with the 4 wheel steering and the Subaru SVX were novelty cars that I would have jumped at the chance to own one.

My brother's 1971 Oldsmobile 442 Hardtop Coupe with console mounted shifter (auto) in Sienna with White interior trim and stripes. He had bought used but mint off of a young single woman who's father had cared for it. He sold it cheap before I had a shot at it in high school (1977-1980).

I wanted a Firebird Firehawk. I ended up ordering a 2002 Firebird (Formula) Firehawk 6 years after graduating, as my first new car, just the way I wanted it! Still have it, and it will be rolling over 8K miles sometime next summer when it comes out of storage.
I missed the Turbo Grand Prix that it replaced...and then had to purchase beater after beater...blah blah.

In the late 1970s i liked to hang around the guys with muscle cars. My favorite was a red 1972 Dodge Challenger 340 R/T, with black top, interior, and rally stripes. I also liked my pe teachers 1976 Cadillac Seville. High school was still cool then.

As my name implies, I wanted (and still do) a '68 Ford Mustang California Special. Obviously a 4-speed shifter bolted to a 390 cu in V8. Al the bells and whistles. I got close. Throughout my junior and senior year, I had a '67 Mustang with some bells and whistles but only a straight-6 and a 3-speed auto. She gave me some trouble, but she was my first and favorite car so far.

makakio says:

Which ONE? Ha! I wanted a stable of cars. Any Porsche (except a 924) would have worked (though I was partial to the last-years of the 944T and the 81-83 911SC), along with the original Audi Quattro coupe and a VW Vanagon Synchro (Westie, of course). And man oh man I looooved that BMW 850 luxury GT in alpine white.

My cross-the-street neighbor had a 1969 Buick Skylark convertible - blue with white top and white interior. I dreamed about it and the 1972 Buick Skylark GS400 - green with white top and white interior. I had a 1977 VW Rabbit that I liked, but I dreamed of those Buicks.

Back in '94, I wanted a Trans-Am or Z28 but for some reason also loved the late '80's IROC-Z's. Reality was farther apart, however. I ended up driving around a brown Chevette with no radio, no power steering and a 4spd trans! My first car I purchased was an '83 Mustang GT. Luckily now, I have a bit of that dream owning both an '04 Cobra Conv't and a 71 Trans-Am.

I loved those Firehawks too!

Side note - Insideline,

If you guys are going to do more posts like this in your attempt to "Jalopnik-ize" Straightline, then you need to update the blog to allow for embedded pictures/videos, like Jalopnik does. While you're at it, you should apply this update to the LT blog as well.

Just some friendly suggestions :)

I am almost embarrassed to say now, but in high school I really wanted a 4wd blue, Nissan Xterra. I really had no true reason for wanting one other than it always caught my eye. Then I drove one and realized the error in my ways.

So thinking back to a year ago...I wanted a 2004 Mustang SVT Cobra more than anything. A close second would have to be a 2002 Pontiac Trans-Am WS6 Ram Air.

To be honest I would still love to have either one of these cars

I bought a new 1974 Monte Carlo my senior year. I really wanted an Alfa GTV 2000, a 2002tii, a 260Z or a Jensen Healey, but my Dad was co-signing and wanted me to buy a domestic car with a nearby dealer. Insurance was too high on the Z28 and the Mustang II was unadulterated crap, so I settled for the Monte Carlo, mainly because all of the car magazines were stating that it drove and handled very much like a European sports sedan.

In high schooL, early '80s, I wanted a Buick Regal Grand National, an SVO Mustang or Mustang GT Convertible. What I had was a 1957 Bel Air Sport Coupe which I realized was pretty cool at the time, but with the clarity of age I understand that what I lusted for was pretty much junk. The hours (and hours and hours and hours) my dad and I spent restoring the Chevy showed more love than a gift of a new Corvette...but I'd have taken it if I could have gotten it! I actually tried to buy a 454/4-speed Corvette roadster but Mom and the insurance man said "No way on earth" when I was 15.

I never had a cool car in HS but my friends all drove Camaros, Trans-Ams, or Mustangs.

I remember trying to talk my dad into getting a Ford SHO for the family car (which I can't believe no one has mentioned). For it's time it was an awesome car. The other contemporary dream car was the Grand National but financially was out of our league. I'm pretty sure in the 80's I had never even seen a BMW and Porsche was so exotic it was beyond comprehension (something I would imagine only CEOs of industry and pro athletes would drive).

When I started driving, the Corvette entered its third generation in 1968. I wanted one!

In high school, I started with a 55 Chevy pickup (straight 6, 3 speed manual), then a 66 Mustang (straight 6, 4 speed manual), and finally, a 66 El Camino (straight six, 3 speed manual) that I continued with through college.

@lvgti: Yeah, I forgot about my love for the Hawks. My buddy's brother had one-- a Silver Hawk, I believe. But I always wanted the Golden Hawk.

But the Hawks were obtainable for many people. Not so for the Facel Vega, which then became a fantasy for me. Unless... I will need to Google to see what years the FV was made; maybe it was past my High School years.

I was in high school 79-83. What I wanted was the '65 Impala 396 convertible parked and never moved in the driveway of the house behind mine. I passed it everyday for years on my paper route and always stopped to look.

Then, out of nowhere, my dad buys it when I am 15 and brings it home. The body was solid, but it didn't run and needed some mechanical work. Under the hood was glorious, big block V8 with a 750 Holley double pumper. About 3 months after buying it he managed to chip a tooth off the flywheel (I don't recall what he was doing). He didn't want to fix it and sold it to the mechanic down the street. I never even got to hear it run.

I was (and 28 years later remain) heartbroken.

Thanks for taking originality points away from me lol. Although to be honest, I would have settled for any of the LT1 B-bodies. A 96 Impala would have been the dream. Although I would have taken a 94-96 Roadmaster or Fleetwood as well :). This girl has a 94 Roadmaster in my complex. They're still nice machines when in good condition.
