GMC Sierra All Terrain HD Concept Makes Raptor Look Reasonable

11-sierra-concept-hd-071.jp.jpg

It takes a lot to make a ford Raptor seem demure and rational. This GMC Sierra All Terrain HD does it, though.

This massive GM, set for the stage at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show, features a 6.6-liter 397 horsepower Duramax turbo-diesel V8 with 765 pound-feet of torque. The transmission is a six-speed Allison 1000 unit.

The Sierra All Terrain concept is shorter than a traditional HD Sierra, but features upgraded suspension with three-inches more clearance, a wider -- 73 inch -- track, front and rear jounce shocks, electronic disconnect stabilizer bars, composite underbody protection, 35" BF Goodrich tires on 20" rims and Fox shocks with remote reservoirs in the wheel liner.

Do we expect this to hit production? No. But this is said to foretell the future styling direction of GMC's truck line. That said, BUILD IT. Ford did.....but Ford didn't include Ram Boxes like GMC has here.

It just looks like any other XXL pickup. When I see useless things like this, I think about driving it through a small village in Germany, or Italy, or--hell-- even Provincetown, MA.

Even though both vehicles have no real reason to exist, I will say that the Raptor is the better looking of the two. GM just doesn't seem to want to break away from the past-- in regard to pickups, anyway.

I rode in my nephew's F250 CrewCab, with the 10 cyl. engine. I can't understand how anyone can put up with the ride quality. No thanks.

HD trucks are rough until you load them up. I was moving a ram5500 around with nothing in the back, a speed bump nearly knocked me clear across the cabin.

This truck would be cool, but it would just be copying another halo vehicle. They just wish they thought of it first

@ed124c: While no HD will ever ride like a Cadillac the GM trucks with their IFS are widely known to have the best road manners and ride.

I wish they would build this truck just as is. Offer a gas motor for those who want it, but I will take that exact truck. I love the Raptor but I couldn't buy such a light duty truck, so this makes perfect sense to me. Sadly, I don't think GM will build it.

Also side note, Dodge wasn't the first to have that style of bedside storage. The Chevy Avalanche/ Cadillac Escalade EXT have had them for years. Dodge just made them bigger.

I just don't understand GM's fascination with putting a round peg in a square hole... ie squared off wheel wells. That's one design trait I can't stand to look at.

Tho i'm not the biggest lover of trucks; this is worlds more exciting to look at than the next "big step" in eco friendly automotive design. Aside from super car makers & high end luxury brands, no ones coming out with anything intriguing. 5 years ago i would have looked at the truck and continued on through the blog; the day that this is the most interesting thing to read about for the everyday buyer(instead of hybrid, EV, hybrid, hybrid, McLaren, Jag with jet engine, hybrid, hybrid, Ev, truck)...is a sad one. I like the design of this truck, a bit subtle in the changes, i agree with the square fenders being odd with the round, the only cases that works is with Jeep; on a truck it seems weird.... especially with that big of a gap...looks rugged tho.

I'm a big fan of GM, and trucks. And this one would be awesome. And GM has what it takes to build this truck to live up to the dreams. But.... I'm not gonna hold my breath. GM has had one of the best parts bins for a long time, and they just refuse to put any of the good stuff together in one package. Maybe the "New" GM will have the balls to build something that isn't politically correct like this, but I doubt it.

GM's 3/4 and 1-tons have always ridden better than the competition and the new chassis under the 2011 trucks further improve the formula, while simultaneously expanding on the capabilities. Do not assume that all 3/4 and 1-ton trucks ride like buckboards.

GM trucks do have the best ride in the business. I will even say that a Suburban has one of the best highway rides of any vehicle. This is the best road trip vehicle in my opinion. Lots of room, great ride superb HVAC and bladder bursting fuel range.

I love our Tahoe for long trips too allthingshonda. I'm not sure I'd say its a good as you do, but it is pretty relaxed. Just needs more passing power at freeway speeds - and 18-19 mpg at 75 mph sucks a lot of gas.

I have driven GMC's for over thirty years, can not remember how many fords and dodge trucks I have pulled from the mud or snow.
GMC is in "my opinion" the hardest pulling truck made. My 08 Sierra rides like a caddy and huals anything I throw at it.
This new Sierra All Terrain would be just fine by me. It has the balls to do it all and the looks to go with it...Bring it on i will buy one.......
