We can't make that stuff up, kids. That's all from the press release on the 2011 Dodge Durango. Also included in the press release are the engine options for the 2011 Durango: a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 or a 5.7-liter HEMI (with multi-displacement mode and four-cylinder mode). The engines will be able to tow 6,200 lbs and 7,400 lbs respectively.
The 2011 Durango will also offer standard side-curtain air bags, ESC, blind spot monitoring, rear cross path detection, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control and keyless entry / start.

make the gront grille black mesh with body color crosshair insert, smoke the headlamp elements, ditch the chrome wheels for alloys similar to the challenger SRT8-s 5 spokes and it would actually look decent! also, im going to wait for better photos, these are horribly composed and the photographer should be shot...

looks good. I'm sure we are looking at the top model so all the "I cant stand chrome" people can relax. This isnt a base model and much of the bright work is likely optional. If you want a car with no chrome get a Volvo or something. American cars have been using chrome trime for decades and that's how it goes.
I suspect that most of the haters either own or aspire to own the Pilot. Compared to the Honda (which is a top seller) this thing might as well be a Ferrari.

What is the deal with these photos? The chrome looks really tacky the way it is all washed out. A chrome grill should be fine but it looks terrible in these shots. You can keep the chrome wheels no matter what though.
I'm not sure about that D-pillar either. It looks a little droopy and the black hides it in these pictures. I want to see it some other colors.
smilez says:
09:11 AM, 09/ 2/10
This is for sure the top of the line Durango, RT, SLT+, whatever they're going to call it. I'm sure the other models won't have near the amounts of chrome as this.
I'm really liking it. I loved the Magnum, and was disappointed they got rid of it. There are enough shots here to make it look like a Magnum on steroids (picture #2 in particular)! Good tow ratings, I'm sure it has a much improved ride, and the interior jumped in quality to the levels of the GC. Very impressive.
I'm sure there will soon be hords of people complaining about the lack of off-road abilities, but I really don't think the original was all that well equipped for the Rubicon either. This will do what 99% of what the buyers need it to do. The majority of 3-row vehicles really aren't made for tackling the hills anyway.
This and the new GC are giving me great hopes for Chrysler, not to mention the rest of their portfolio that will be coming out soon. Way to go.

I don't think they are putting the hemi in there transversley with a FWD setup... if this is a crossover (Unibody with fully independent suspension) with RWD I'm impressed. It has to be RWD based... no way they could have tow ratings like that on a FWD set up...

It's a uni-body (as all Cherokees and Grand Cherokees have been) with front a rear independent suspension. It's based on the running gear of the current new Grand Cherokee. It's rear wheel drive, or optioned with one of Jeeps cheaper AWD transfer cases if that logo on the tailgate is to be believed.
I don't consider it a crossover.

The pictures aren't very good but from the looks of it I'm disappointed. Generic design with tacky amounts of chrome and an overdone grille - and I agree the wheels do look very dated already. Dodge is going to sell a ton of these. Just look at how this vehicle is calling for the Urban SUV treatment. I can already see many of them wearing dark tints, 22- 24inch rims, magna flow exhaust and a pair of 12's in the hatch.

This is a better looking Durango than the current model but considering how low the bar set that was an easy imporvement. If I had to choose I would rather keep the chrome and get rid of the cross-hair grille; it needs to go.
As I've stated before the Durango (and Aspen) have always been oddities to me. The Jeep is/was an obvious competitor to other mid-size utes but the Durango was too big for that segment and too small for the established full sized competition (Tahoe, Expedition etc).
If this Durango is going to be a crossover, why offer the V8? If it going to be a BOF SUV it's starting off weaker than the competition if the tow ratings are correct.
So once again who is this targeted against?
spgreyhound says:

Non-sarcastic: I really do hope Chrysler can get back on track and produce a lineup of vehicles that can support them profitably. Its non-upper management employees deserve that much, having been granted a second chance.
Sarcastic: Much, Much, MUCH better than the last Durango, but that's not saying much. I'm so glad to have contributed to this effort. Of course, the consumers will decided this things fate. A plethora of chrome, limited off-road capability, and the 'HEMI' engine are all silly to me. This vehicle is a rolling cliche.

I wonder what the price point is. I mean what would make you choose this one over the more off road capable Jeep. Granted, if they give it one of Jeeps 4x4 systems, it should get along just fine for the intended buyer, However, the Jeep seems to have all that land rover style systems and such, its part of why i think its a much more interesting car. If they bang off a few upgrades, then this should come in cheaper. I would just hate to see another Nitro v Liberty situation. I believe edmunds did a article on it, declaring that there really wasn't a point for the Nitro because the Jeep had all the +++ for a similar price. I know sales wouldn't change drastically for this, but it was enough that edmunds had something to say. So whats it look like to you. Is this a grown up version of the Nitro Liberty throw down.... interestingly enough...the nitro was MUCH gaudier then the Liberty..

@PaulBubel:
"I don't consider it a crossover."
But that's exactly what it is. It just happens to be RWD instead of FWD based. The strong platform allows and RWD architecture are responsible for it's towing numbers, but it's also responsible for it's portly weight. A basic RWD V6 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee weighs nearly 4500 lbs when V6 powered. Making it bigger to accomodate 3 rows will add atleast a couple hundred lbs. I'm betting a loaded v8 AWD model will easily crest 5000 lbs and be lucky to return 19mpg highway.

Press release:
Dodge Brand Product Onslaught Begins: Introducing the All-new 2011 Dodge Durango, the Performance SUV with a Soul
September 2, 2010 , Auburn Hills, Mich. –
Buckle in and hold tight. Dodge is jumping back into the sport utility (SUV) segment with the 2011 Dodge Durango, a three-row vehicle spacious enough to carry the entire crew and performance-tuned to thrill anyone who truly loves to drive. Durango will lead the Dodge brand's new product onslaught for 2011.
From its sleek exterior design to its modern, spacious interior, and intelligent, fuel-efficient and powerful powertrain options, the 2011 Dodge Durango is all-new from the inside out. And the changes are more than skin deep. The Durango's stiffened unibody structure is engineered with the driving enthusiast in mind. The end result is a vehicle that delivers premium driving performance combined with SUV capability and crossover versatility.
The all-new Durango features two engine options: the standard fuel-efficient 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine and the available 5.7-liter HEMI engine with fuel-saving, Multi-displacement system (MDS) four-cylinder mode. Both engines feature variable-valve timing (VVT) and are available with all-wheel drive. In addition to great efficiency, the engines provide exceptional V-6 and V-8 towing capability with standard trailer sway control (V-8 - 7,400 lbs. and Best-in-class V-6 – 6,200 lbs.). When equipped with the HEMI® V-8, the all-new Durango can tow more weight than a 24-foot boat and trailer.
The Durango's all-new interior is a surprise owners always deserved but never expected. Created by the same interior design studio that designed the much-lauded interior in the Ram trucks and the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Durango's luxurious interior materials and thoughtful touches will make owners and their crews want to jump in, hunker down and thoroughly enjoy even the longest drive. Everywhere they touch, Durango passengers will feel materials that are refined and soft to the touch. Not only is it a pleasure to behold, it is extremely functional and gives owners a first-class experience, regardless of the trim level. Durango's interior is also extremely comfortable for all three rows of passengers, and there's a surprising amount of interior flexibility. With 22 different seating configurations, there's plenty of room to store and move plenty of people and their gear.
The all-new 2011 Dodge Durango also offers consumers 45 safety and security features, including standard front seat-mounted side air bags and standard side-curtain air bags that cover passengers in all three rows, as well as all-new standard active head restraints. Electronic Stability Control also is standard. Other available safety and security technologies include Blind-spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Path detection, Forward Collision Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control and Keyless Enter-n' Go.
The best part is, consumers will get all of the all-new Durango's capability, functionality and flexibility and still get excellent fuel efficiency. In fact, drivers can go more than 500 miles, that's the distance from San Diego to San Francisco or from Detroit to New York City, without having to stop for fuel.
Built at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Mich., the new 2011 Dodge Durango arrives in showrooms in the fourth quarter of 2010.

I can tell that the new Grand Cherokee and this new Durango are related by the back end, the lights in particualr. I like this design though, I dont have a problem with the chrome wheels, but a nice polished wheel or cast aluminum would be nice as well. I like how muscular it looks and yes, the brille would look better if the bars were just chrome and the crosshairs black. Ive already formed an opinion of what the interior will look and feel like. I hope Dodge will add more color to the options list then your basic, black, beige/tan, and gray. Otherwise, nice job Dodge !!!

Exactly. Where do these people live? I was in Miami and chrome was EVERYWHERE including on the rims of fine European cars driving around South Beach. Get a grip folks- people like shiny wheels and trim. Many people who buy European cars without any "bling" add rims for more style. And no, I'm not talking about wannabe rappers either. Testy testy.
With the restrictions that CAFE is imposing on the auto industry it does not make sense to offer a V8 in a crossover. That explains why none of the "competition" (look at the vehicles mentioned by 1487) offers one and again; since the Tahoes, Expeditions and Armadas of the world can all tow 8,000+lbs I stand behind my earlier statement that the 7,400lbs mentioned here is UNimpressive.

Um folksz; this is just a photo shop version. You don't need "Grills" if you don't want them.
Another thing: The 290 hp V6 is the primary focus, that's why the V8 is an option....
The Pilot/ MDX is a fine car, but too boring for me, but that's my preference, as is every one on here who may or may not like it. This is why we live in the U.S. to begin with.... it's called freedom of choice, my fellow bloggers.
This Durango has nice sheet metal, and alloy wheels with a black grill would look tough.
The side panels look just like a BMW X5, but the rest is very distinctive. Not everyone likes the European look, and I personally would prefer a GTR or CTS when it comes to styling. It's different, and the performance is to my liking.
Even haters, must admit this Durango is much better in every way compared to the past generations.

If you agree that the Durango's competition is the Acadia/Outlook/Enclave/Traverse, Pilot and Explorer, then the Durango IS impressive. The tow ratings are: 5,400 (Lambdas), 3,500 and 4500 (Pilot) and 5,000 for the Explorer. The Durango is 6,200 for the 6 and 7,400 for the 8.
The Durango will not kill Dodge’s CAFE rating. Plus, the majority purchased will be the Pentastar. And in my opinion, having the V-8 is good BECAUSE the others aren’t offering it. Ford’s got two choices, both 6's (and good ones)and that’s about it. No matter how many greenies complain, V-8's will be a part of the good ol' US market for a few more years to come...at least.
I think you need to decide who you see the competition as. This vehicle is a crossover in every sense. It even crosses the line between SUV and CUV. It’s the same as it was before, a medium size SUV (or CUV, hell I don’t even know). It’s a tweener…with a Hemi!

Per foxtrot685, "What he said !" I volunteer the fire ant mounds in my back pasture. Shooting the photographer is a waste of good ammunition. It would be more fun to watch the fire ants eat him (her?) alive ;-)

To those who don't like chrome, get over yourself! Seriously, and stop calling it bling just because some rapper called it that. German and Japanese make their cars their way, so let Americans make it their own way too!
The only things I don't like about this design is the perpetual crosshair and the emblem on the steering wheel. Just, put Dodge on there, Dodge! No more crosshairs!

It's not that much chrome. Chrome wheels are stupid but chrome accents aren't bad when done right. Hell there are some older cars that are classics that have tons of chrome.

Another all-black suv with tinted windows, blingy wheels and overdone grill. Something for the "gutsy" suburban soccer moms or to up some guys "butch" cred. *yawn* Don't like it, can you tell?

"This is for you 1487, places like south florida/miami are FULL Of these people with horrendous bad taste. rich does not always equal smart or with good taste."
LOL! Yes, if they dont share your Euro fetish taste they have bad taste. And yes the Durango is "over styled" even though its basically a wagon shape with a dodge grille on the front. If people actually looked at the pics they would notice the grille has a metallic look mesh which is really what people are reacting to here. There really isnt that much chrome on the vehicle and if chrome is tacky than everything from Lexus to audi to Acura is tacky these days.
"German and Japanese make their cars their way, so let Americans make it their own way too! "
Exactly. You can get chrome wheels on some new Audi models like the A8.

"With the restrictions that CAFE is imposing on the auto industry it does not make sense to offer a V8 in a crossover. That explains why none of the "competition" (look at the vehicles mentioned by 1487) offers one and again; since the Tahoes, Expeditions and Armadas of the world can all tow 8,000+lbs I stand behind my earlier statement that the 7,400lbs mentioned here is UNimpressive."
Actually most of the competition doesnt offer V8s because they are FWD based. This is RWD based and the Hemi fits so its offered. Its a nice option for those who want it. Dodge doesn't offer a larger BOF V8 SUV like Ford and Chevy and Toyota so it makes perfect sense to offer a V8 here. I doubt more than 20% of buyers will get the V8. Once the 8 speed arrives you can bet mileage will be better than average. Look what 8 speeds have done for the 5 series and X5 in terms of mileage.

"I think I've heard of those but none of them offer a V8 which goes back to my earlier point. Depending on the weight of this vehicle the only reason to offer a V8 is just to say you have one."
Uh, just because they dont offer a V8 doesnt mean they arent direct competitors for this vehicle. Their V6 engines have similar output to the pentastar and they seat 7 or 8 in three rows. They are DIRECT competitors. The V8 will be offered for better acceleration and towing- the same reasons V8s are always offered on SUVs. Nothing new there. The majority of Durangos will be sold with V6s which is exactly what you will find under the hood of the lambdas.

Don't forget the four banger Ford is offering for the Explorer. That will be the optional engine and the one Ford claims will offer the best fuel economy.

I stand corrected. Forgot about the 4 that they'll offer. I just don't see that pulling the Explorer around too well though. I know the Explorer isn't the heaviest of the competition, but that's a lot of wait to pull around with 4 cylinders. It's good to have the option though...
I see the V-8 as the same with AWD. I may not need it much, but I will always love the fact that it's there when I do. That's just my opinion.

This looks terrific. Its got the nice truck shape, and looks very aggressive. Sure the chrome is a bit much for my liking, but as others have said, that's not going to be std equipment.
I'd love to see one with some BF All-Terrains, a 2-inch lift, along with some other off-road goodies. Should look great.
Dodge, thank you for keeping the boxy SUV shape. Down with crossovers I say!

And it will be offered in FWD trim only.

And the competetion is mostly FWD biased vehicles. Acadia, Traverse, Enclave, Pilot, and Explorer are FWD vehicles. And again this is smaller than the BOF dinosaurs that you've mentioned

Your are so right. This isn't the fifties, so I don't see why they cladded this thing down with so much chrome. Then the headlights blent into the grill because they are too ambient and the two don't contrast enough with each other.

Is that another new logo for Dodge on the steering wheel pic??? What happened to the racing stripes??? And shouldn't this be a Ram Durango??? Why even produce the damn thing at all, Jeep already sells almost the exact same thing as the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

This is for the Euro-Trash complaining about too much chrome. If the emblem had the letters MB or RR on it, then everything would be just fine. Since it is American, then it is in bad taste.

Mopar or No Car!!!!!! To the Dodge Boys, I own a 2001 Durango and a 2005 Dakota club cab slt...both have the 4.7 in them...pleanty of power(with a little help from the power chips)...no complaints there but...I really wish that they had a bit more ground clearance or at least the option of a good lift kit. I would really like to stuff a set of 33 BFGs under both of these trucks without compromising handling. Maybe along the same design as the rubicon. You got the uuummmpphhh under the hood, it might be nice to take it places without smashing in the trans pan. One other thing....a 4 cyl cummins for the 2011 Durangos and any other like vehicle would be nice!!!!!!

Does anyone here own a 2011 Durango? I do own one, a black w/ black interior Express base model. The comments about chrome is a non issue and foolish. You can choose from several models with many different options. Chrome has little to do with most of them. If your thing is aluminum alloy, than they have you covered. I believe the target market is the Traverse. I just traded my Traverse to get my new Durango and boy am I pleased. I have owned 5 mini vans and a Suburban and nothing in that size class can compare. This vehicle turns heads with its muscle styling. I finally own a vehicle that my four boys aren't embarressed to be picked up in. As a Dad, I am so glad not to pick them up in something like a soccer Mom would drive. Nothing personal soccer Mom's, remember, I had 5 mini vans. That was me.
It is powerful, solid, and you know you are in a truck, but, yet it drives very fluid and smooth and has all the stuff and toys you would find in a roomy family 3 row vehicle. I'm 48 and happily married with 6 kids, but feel like a stud in my new Durango. Hey girls, look at me. I looked at the new highly touted Explorer and nearly bought it until they told me it would take 7-8 months to order. Are you kidding me? (Problems with production?) I know its popular and no dealer has more than 1-2 on its lot but the ride in the Durango was far superior. Too bad Ford! You lost a sale. I was filling out the credit app when they told me the news. I never even considered a Dodge. I thought the company was dead. I haven't seen a new Durango in years. I was very suprised to see it on its web page after the Ford fiasco and drove up for a test drive. I am sooooooo glad now that the Explorer was not available. Don't take anyones advise other than go up and test drive one yourself. I bet even you haters might like it. Warning: Like most vehicles now a days, dealers order the top of the line trim with all the extra options making it very pricy. Do your homework online and find out where the equipt Durango's the way you like are. Prices start at $29000-30 / mileage for AWD is 16 - 22 mpg on average. You won't be disappointed.
