Here's the deal: You've got a lovely weekend in Detroit about to begin; what do you do?. And, no, "go to Chicago" is not among the options, smarty.
Which do you drive? The (gulp!) $98,000, 505-hp Corvette Z06 with the Carbon and Z07 packages or the $55,000 550-hp Shelby GT500 with the SVT Performance Package?

I'm in the mid atlantic region but I'll fly to Detroit to drive either one for the weekend. These cars will be on the lawn at Pebble Beach in 30 years. Youngsters will point and gasp at the sight of large displacement V8s and manual?? transmissions, especially the Ford with a blower. Yes son, those where the days when real men shifted their own gears.

Quite the dilemma you've got Daniel. Go with the Vette! Nah...go with the Mustang! Perhaps, put both keys in a hat, give it a shake and reach in for the winner. Ha!
tellurium says:

The GT500. I'd assume its suspension may be a "little" better on detroit roads.

Wow. What a choice. I'll take the Corvette, but it's not like there is a bad choice here.

Vette, theres too many mustangs on the road and too many "special editions" now the Vette...it just looks sexy, no matter which one u get.
smilez says:
03:38 PM, 08/27/10
The Vette is a sweet ride. But since I haven't bought the pre-requisite gold chain, I'd have to say the Mustang.
greenpony says:

I'd drive the Vette on the weekend and the Mustang during the week. Thank you, have a nice day.
makakio says:

Take the keys for both. Vette for Friday night and Saturday morning, 'stang for Saturday night and Sunday morning. Return both needing new rubber.
supra4 says:

Kind of a sports car vs. muscle car comparison (although the new stang does like to turn now). I wouldn't kick either out of bed, but I would take the Corvette hands down.
Smilez: I'll pick up a gold chain but you can only drink pabst all weekend! lol

Nope, I see far more Vettes than Shelbys.....Mustang for me any day. BUT like was said above, I would not kick either out of bed.

2) Drive to Chicago.
peebz says:

Take the Mustang!! It is waaaay more comfortable, it has more room and it is still wicked fast! Better interior conveniences too, and better gas mileage. I can't believe this is even debatable... haha
wrinklebump says:
07:58 PM, 08/27/10
haha I remember Maxim did this thing a few years ago where the editors voted on their favorite city for a weekend of debauchery and they chose Detroit because it's cheap, the casinos and the proximity to the duty-free in Canada. Pretty amazing.
hybris says:
08:17 PM, 08/27/10
I'll take the Shelby.
Around KCK there are quite a few Mustangs with a few Corvettes from various eras but very rarely do you see a Shelby.

z-06 all the way. i dunno about your cities, but i see gt-500's all the time they out number the z06's by about 3-1. id take the corvette, not to mention that it'lll wipe the floor with the ford in any situation aside from the number of seats. (for what its worth) it burns less gas too.
audisport says:

I'm sorry but $100k for a Vette w/o supercharger and ZR1 badges equals FAIL!!
With that being said, grab it and hit the Detroit Autobahn, AKA I-696.

OOOOOH THIS IS NOT AN EASY CHOICE IF AND ONLY IF THE MUSTANG IN THE PIC WAS A CONVERTIBLE I WOULD PIC IT BUT SINCE THE VETTE HAS T-TOPS SO VETTE FOR 500 ALEX! LOL
P.S. IM THE BIGGEST FORD FAN EVER SO ILL WITH DRAW AND GO WITH MY ROOTS LOL MUSTANG RULES!!!!!

I don't care what else is on the road... Give me that NA 427" and follow the smell of burnt rubber boys! We're gonna have us some fun!
By the way, when did they start offering the targa option on the Z-06s?
cah11705 says:

I'm way to much of a Corvette guy to not go with it. I just don't understand why anyone would take a hardtop GT500 over a Corvette Z06 with a removable roof.
supergoji says:

Z06 is does everything faster. plus get's better gas mileage.
derrell says:

campi3ell says:

If the streets weren't so horrid, I'd say take the Corvette.
If I didn't see them everywhere already, I'd say take the Mustang.
Only way to decide, flip a coin and go from there. Say... best 3 out of 5, and just have fun.
lostboyz says:
03:52 AM, 08/30/10
I love the comment that the mustang has too much plastic on the back, even though the corvette is made of plastic.
I'd take the gt500 anyday

Ahhh... it's a Z06 carbon fiber package, so the roof is made of carbon fiber, it's NOT removable

Folks,
Thanks for being there in my time of need. Unfortunately, since you guys couldn't seem to agree on the best weekend car (other than that one of them should be yours), I was forced to use a more scientific method known as putting both keys in my helmet, closing my eyes and grabbing one of the leatherette key fobs.
So I drove the Z06 and it was spectacular. I suppose ergsum probably already knew that since he no doubt heard the Inferno Orange Z06 snapping and popping excitedly on the overrun when I was up around his neck of woods this weekend. This, in the considered opinion of this man, is the perfect modern Corvette. This does not mean that I think it's a perfect car, per se. Like, for example, it lists for a staggering $98,000, as equipped. But that savage, high-revving 7.0-liter motor, those utterly astounding brakes, those spectacular tires, the dark-finish wheels...well, hot damn!...that is some machine. Want to read a full comparison test including a carbon-equipped Z06 very much like this one? Sure you do. Go here:

And fear not Ford fans, I fully planning on tearing the ass end off of the GT500 too. In fact, I do believe that I'll begin that process tonight...or possibly this afternoon. Meanwhile, read our full test of a Grabber Blue 2011 GT500 we took loan of at the Southern California-based home office.
