7Tune is reporting that in an interview with Toyota's Dr. Shigeyuki Hori, Project General Manager for the Sports Vehicle Management Division and Kazuo Okino, Group Manager, that the long-awaited Toyota FT-86 was on-track and that rumors of a 2013 release date were "erroneous." Target release date is November of 2011 and Toyota is aiming for a mid-level price of $29,000 (2.5-million yen).
It was also reported that despite earlier reports, the FT-86 would not be a hybrid a-la the Honda CR-Z.
We're hesitant to go along with any rumor until an official word comes down either way, but for those waiting eagerly for the Toyota / Subaru sports car to hit the market, it could be just around the corner.

Wow, that image is really nice. If the reality matches that, I may have to get one someday - after my wife forgets her moratorium on car purchases. :D

I didn't feel like waiting, bought my mustang instead.
I'm more interested to see what the subaru version ends up looking like

This looks to be a compelling product from a once-great manufacturer of enthusiast cars. The price seems a bit high, as the larger and presumably more premium Genesis Coupe is in that range. Still, I like where this is going... Down with Crossovers! Up with FRD sports cars!

If Toyota is aiming at $29,000 it better be packing 300hp. If not there are other cheaper then 29K RWD coupes with 300hp that buyers can spend thier coin on.

+1 chente. To paraphrase jederino, at that price why wouldn't you get the Genesis Coupe?

LONG LIVE THE HACHI ROKU!
That is one good looking car.
Mid-level price is $29k. That means the base price will be lower, and the higher range models will be higher.

"Their mid-range level spec will cost about $29,000. They also discussed the possibility of a turbocharged engine, but the decision on that is still up in the air at Toyota."
Hopefully we can expect to see the same turbo 4 in the STI, since Subaru is working on this car as well? 300hp doesn't seem too impossible.

The FT-86 is 15 months away; pricing is always a last minute decision. There will be a lot of stuff happening in the next year plus, which will determine the actual price.
But, 29K? I can get a Mustang V6 for mid 20s, and I doubt that the Ft-86 will have power to match the Mustang.
The Genesis Coupe V6 is now priced about the same as an equally equipped Mustang V6, so I would imagine that Toyota/Subaru would have to hit that price point in order to be competitive.

Looks like something Toyota should slap a Supra badge on. Didn't initial reports state that Toyota was looking to recapture the Corolla A86 essence??? Guess that ship has sailed with a $29K price!!! Hopefully the build quality matches up to the high price

I'm excited to see it. But at 29k, it better perform otherworldly for the under 30k rwd class, because if not, it would be hard to justify this over a cheaper, more powerful (I'm guessing) Chevy Comaro/Hyundai Genesis.

$29,000 is probably the Japanese price.
"Toyota is aiming for a mid-level price of $29,000 (2.5-million yen)"
I say when it reaches the US it will be around $23-$25k, a little more than a Civic Si.

$29000 is the target price for Japanese market, and possibility includes sales tax and destination. Price various in different markets. I’ve heard a base RAV4 sale for 50k in Norway and a BMW 318i cost 70k in Taiwan. I bet the base FT-86 will be less than 25k in the U.S.

Profile is clearly GT-R inspired so no wonders it looks good, but if they want to sell that, it has to be CHEAP and LIGHTWEIGHT. Anything for $25k+ and moving >3k lbs is dead on arrival.

sharp profile, minus the wingy thing at the back. hope they don't botch the front end like the rest of their cars.
I'm with the Subaru fans - can't wait to see a turbo 4 with AWD and six speed manual. that might be worth 29k.

The FT is going to have a 4 cylinder. You can bet your bottom dollar on it, for the Subaru version i'm thinking they will drop the WRX motor into it. Hopefully they WON'T make it 4wd, because then its just stupid. RWD.
nippononly says:

Unlike Genesis and Mustang, this WON'T weigh well over 3000 pounds (and won't have a solid beam rear - hello Mustang) and WON'T handle like a seagoing vessel. So HANDLING will be its strong suit. 225-250 hp will be plenty for the base model. I hope they do the STi turbo as well and call it a Supra. But what about the similarly-styled coupe they are planning with the 1.5 from the Yaris? This may mean that is going to come out late next year as well...

This (both the Toyota and the Scoobie) is one of the few...if not the only cars I am looking forward to. I CANT WAIT!
If the performance figures can almost match an evo or sti, 30k would be a bargain. I'm sure aftermarket bolt ons will flow like a torrent once this bad-boy comes out.
I hope they but in a 4banger turbo that responds well to boost. This will be so sweet!
