Mercedes-Benz has finally released details and images of the 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL63 AMG and 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG. The new full-size coupes sport revised interiors, more aggressive exteriors, and, in the case of the CL63 AMG, an all-new 563-horsepower 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 which cranks out 664 lb-feet of torque. (Hp/torque figures require AMG performance package. Otherwise, HP is 536 and torque a paltry 590.) The transmissin is the AMG Speedshift MCT 7-Speed.
The CL63 also greens-up its bruiser image, returning 27% better fuel economy and carries a new start/stop function-- which is de-activateed in "sport" and "manual" modes.
The big-boy CL65 AMG keeps its monsterous twin-turbo, which gets a slight bump in power to 621-horsepower, but keeps the same 738 lb-ft torque rating. Power is still routed to the back wheels via a five-speed automatic transmission.

This might sound like a stupid question to some but with start/stop equipped cars how does the AC continue to work? Is the AC compressor electrically driven?

Awesome for the people who can afford them. Guys like me have to wait five years for these cars to come down to real-world price levels. Well, at least the 63. I don't know about the 65's residuals.

A start stop. really? To save money in a 6.2 (yes , 2) and 6.5 litre v8 AMG car? Might as well not crush the grapes in wine to save costs...-___- stupid...

@slrracing
That's a great question to which neither I nor anybody else seems to know...but I'd guess it'll be electrically driven. If the start-stop stops in rush hour for 2 hours, the Germans aren't THAT stupid to cut off the AC.

My sentiments exactly. It's just so ridiculous to worry about fuel economy or emissions in a 500+ HP/500+ ft-lb. vehicle that cost $150k. :-/

Don't be fooled. The start/stop feature is not there for your benefit. It is there for MB's benefit, so as to improve CAFE scores. That way they can sell even more AMG themed cars with fewer penalties.

Exactly. It is a big benefit though. Sitting at a 5 minute red light with a Supercharged V8 uses a good deal of fuel (STS-V). I would love to have a start/stop feature available. The start/stop will give a measurable uptick in real world fuel economy, but it was developed for the purpose of curving their CAFE scores.

@ mrryte
Even if it helps Mercedes, how much better can it be? After all the new S63 AMG has a 5.5 litre V8. Also with start stop. Looks like Mercedes has to tune down their engines, which may just improve their dependability a bit.
