Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid to Race in America

porsche gt3 r hybrid.jpg

After a successful performance at this year's Nurburgring 24-hour race, the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid race car will compete in the 13th annual Petit Le Mans ALMS race at Road Atlanta on October 2, 2010. Adding a hybrid racecar to the series is a natural for the American Le Mans Series who touts themselves as the Global Leader of Green Racing. Many vehicles in the series are running alternative street fuels including, E85-- some of those are running cellulosic E85-- diesel and E10 ethanol.

Hybrids are not currently covered under GT class regulations and so the GT3 R Hybrid will not be competing for points.

Watch it in Atlanta in October, or read Inside Line's first drive now, here.

Considering the gt3 cup car did so well at pikes peak, I wanna see this baby do the hill climb. The electric boost should be pretty usefull once the air gets thinner and the engine looses some power.

@santiagofdz: There's so little breaking on a hill climb that the hybrid system would barely charge, and you'd end up with very little boost on your way up the mountain. Just extra weight to lug up the hill.

Good point. Knowing very little of hill climbs I forgot that detail. Still I wonder how much (or how little) charge would it get.

I got to admit that it is impressive that it did run for 22 hours but I want to know what failed at the very end?
