I can't put my finger on it, but something's not right with this Ferrari 458 Italia, formerly of Switzerland. Here we have the death of yet another supercar. Seems like these things just aren't fast enough to escape the reaper. If they don't sling themselves (can't be the driver's fault) off the road, they're catching fire on peaceful Swiss roads.
Using our knowledge of fire-destruction as obtained by TV cop dramas (and the photo after the jump) we'd say that the most burned area-- the driver side-- was where the fire started before, you know, this happened.
Follow the jump for the aftermath....

Italian build quality right there....

Probably caused by a cigarette... haha

Since the fire started relatively small, I assume the driver was okay?
Wrecked Exotics has a lot of content where the occupants did not survive, which I think is in poor taste (no matter how much I may resent someone for driving a car I could probably never afford).

Ha ha ha ha! I seem to recall that I wrote something about 458 reliability in the 4 supercars article from yesterday. I was right! Good old Italian electronics.

+1 e90_m3.
The last picture shows how little steel is in the car. It looks like the only metal is in the engine bay and the wheels!!!!

Don't order the Rosso Scorcha paint, I guess.
It really is sad to see something so beautiful destroyed.

Breadwagon (M Coupe driver, by chance?) do you really think a 458 has steel wheels?

Every Ferrari model has a story and photos of a first year car that burned.
Don't buy a first year Ferrari...
Good thing for Ferrari nobody does reliability reports on Ferraris.

Such a shame when that happens. I have to disagree with many of you. I feel that 95% of these exotic car wrecks and fires are caused by driver error. We are always so quick to blame the car for the problem (ex: Toyota unintended accel.) when in fact its mostly us thats the problem. Some people should really learn how to drive before they take their Ferrari around a corner at a speed that even an F1 car can't handle.
In this case, it sounds like the driver couldn't handle the task of lighting up and driving at the same time. When will they ever learn?

Ferrari's Lambo impression. Dead on.

If you go on wreckedexotics, there's a video of the Ferrari driver and his friends speeding and driving recklessly along the highway through crowded traffic. Then later on, it shows the Ferrari on the side of the road, up in flames.
The bastard got exactly what he deserved LOL.

@bent13: No steel wheels, I'm referring to any metal (aluminum and light alloys included) at all. It looks like the majority of the car is carbon fibre and the lot, with minimal metal. I found that really interesting!

"Glad to see so many people taking pleasure in someone else's misfortune."
Please don't confuse (mis)fortune with poor engineering, questionable build quality, or driver's indiscretions.

@breadwagon,
"@bent13: No steel wheels, I'm referring to any metal (aluminum and light alloys included) at all. It looks like the majority of the car is carbon fibre and the lot, with minimal metal. I found that really interesting!"
The 458 is made mostly of aluminum, not carbon fiber. It simply melted away - most aluminum alloys have a melting point that is half that of common steels.
