Citing "Strong public interest," GM announced that they are increasing production of the Volt by 50% from 30,000 units in 2012, to 45,000.
The announcement was made the same day President Obama visited the Detroit-Hamtramck factory where the Volt is produced. Obama took this visit to declare the $60-billion dollar bailout of GM and Chrysler a success stating it prevented a "brutal, inevitable shot."
All of this comes mere days after UAW leaders released information regarding the expected IPO date for the New GM. There's nothing like "strong public interest" and "increased production" to help along a new stock offering.

If its going to be doing so well, why not ditch the tax rebate?

Strong public interest != actual orders.
Porsche has enough orders placed for as a yet unseen 918 to consider making it. And while I hope for GM's sake the Volt does well, I hope they're not setting themselves up for a screw up.

So much for only $75M of our tax money being used to subsidize this thing...

Risky considering no one has even driven one yet. (short PR spins by select writers don't count)
