Would Anybody Buy An Acura TL Wagon?

TL-Wagon-1600.jpg
That was the question IL reader Andrew Stump pondered while fiddling with Photoshop one day. The result is this rough approximation of an Acura TL wagon, or sport wagon as the Japanese company likes to call them.

Not a half-bad looking ride, although adding a little extra in the back doesn't do much to alleviate the issues at the front. Still, this would be a solid alternative to the hugely expensive European wagons from Audi and Mercedes.

So what do you think, is Mr. Stump on to something?

It does help the front-heavy look appear more balanced. Nice photoshop work.

It does balance out the front, but by adding to the rear. It's like a big'un in spandex pants. Sure adding a spandex top balances things out, but it sure doesn't improve the look any.

paint it black = nice hearse

For some reason it looks even more like it should have a coffin in the back than the Ford Flex.

Ban the Beak! Big chrome beak is not a pleasant design element.

Would I buy a TL wagon? Only if it came with SH-AWD.

Acura's current design team models all of their vehicle's from boats, so this one could be called the 'TL Sea Hearse".

lostboyz says:

I understand its a hearse but thin up the d pillar to make it look less hearsy.

Along these lines I think a taurus wagon would look pretty good.

Actually, this looks better than the ZDX to me.

"Would Anybody Buy An Acura TL Wagon?"

Sure, people buy the ZDX which is ugly and compromised in it's utility..

The real thing looks a lot better. The grill is too aggressive and needs to be balanced with the rest of the car. The sport wagon tappers back more.

The D-pillar looks worse than the CTS Wagon's. It's almost as bad as the R-Class'.

Mr Stump, would you please photoshop the front end? Thank you.

seppoboy says:

Absolutely not. I don't need a car to be "pretty", am much more interested in function and the view from the driver's seat, although good, tasteful design is always appreciated. Aggressively ugly and irrationally ugly and unnecessarily cars are disqualified, however.

What is wrong with Acura these days? The old TL was reasonably decent looking, and the original TSX was a tidy looking car, quite respectable. The current models are just hateful.

The new Ford Mondeo wagon is much more the ticket, too bad it won't be sold here.

Is it just me or is it a perfect hearse?

ne1butu2 says:

I wouldn't buy any Acura with a beak.

albook says:

Why would they buy this? It would cost about the same as the MDX, and why get this if you could have an MDX. And don't anybody give me that bull about wagons being better than Crossovers SUVs. Sure they might be a better driving experience....at a track. But people who drive Acuras don't buy them for performance (sans Integra Type S). Drive the CTS wagon for an hour on a highway, then drive the SRX for an hour on a highway. The CTS is a better driver's car, but I garuntee that anyone with a commute would buy the SRX with no regrets. Likewise, an MDX is going to be much more comfortable to drive than the surprisingly nice handling TL.

I still can't get pass Acura's extremely ugly beak or shield grille. In fact, I stil don't understand why Honda continues with this design trend that absolutely no one (except maybe Honda) likes.
I just don't understand the questionable decisions that Honda is making these days--producing cars like the CR-Z which tries to do too much and succeeds in nothing. I will henceforth call the CR-Z the CR-Y. If Honda continues in its present direction and Hyundai continues to refine its products---I think many loyal Honda customer like myself may be switching to Hyundai. As it stands now, the Sonata seems to be better car than the Accord ( I especially like the Sonata's styling). By all accounts the Veloster will be everything the CR-Z should have been.

I would! I'm a big fan of Acura's TL and model styling in general.

captainvw says:

I WOULD! I am a firm supporter of the shield nose can-opener looking styling of the TL, and I think the photoshopped rump looks GREAT

Future Hearse of America? Probably

bodyblue says:

06:57 AM, 06/27/10

Nope, because nobody buys wagons in the US. It would be a huge waste of money. And if they made a diesel man trans model even less would buy it!

mrjost55 says:

I'm a big fan of hatchbacks/wagons but this just looks like a hearse....

I thought Acura had a sport wagon called the Tourer coming this fall? It was widely shown a few months ago. I believe they already have them in Europe with the Honda badge.
That photoshop isn't close, In fact it's downright ugly.

rickity says:

God! That front end - they are unreal ugly.

allcarsrcool says:

that would be the TSX wagon... that is not the TL.
