Wondering what the hold-up is on your morning commute? You can scope it out on an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch using one of Visteon's new TrafficCamJam apps, available for $2.99 on the iTunes App Store.
Each app lets users view recent traffic-cam pics and get other info on traffic flow in one of 17 major metropolitan areas in the U.S., and Visteon claims that apps provide info faster and more accurately than free radio reports.
The images and info for the app come from TrafficLand, a live-traffic cam aggregator. Visteon's TrafficJamCam apps integrate TrafficLand's live-cam feeds with Internet-based mapping. The app features a map view of traffic and a search function in addition to cameras views. Click here to check out a demo.
While there are more than a dozen traffic-cam apps available for portable Apple devices, what's intriguing about the Visteon app is it comes from a major OEM supplier. And Visteon says the app could easily be integrated into production vehicles.
"It's not a huge technical leap to adapt from a phone to an in-vehicle infotainment system," said T.C. Wingrove, Visteon's senior manager for electronics innovation. "The feedback we can glean from customers will help us refine the system, and will enable an enhanced solution by the time automakers are ready to launch an in-vehicle application."
We'd suggest maybe one with a heads-up display to cut down on distraction.
