Hyundai Genesis Will Get 5.0-liter V8, 8-Speed Transmission for 2012

genesisupdate-f34-950.jpg
Hyundai is wasting no time updating its successful Genesis sedan. Officials at a press event in Korea told Inside Line that the 2012 model due out next year will offer a new 5.0-liter V8 rated at 429-horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque. The same engine will also be used in the larger Equus sedan. In addition to the extra power, both sedans will also get upgraded with a new eight-speed automatic transmission.

Asked whether or not the 5.0-liter engine would fit into the Genesis Coupe, a Hyundai engineer said yes, "but we have chosen not to do that, possibly for the next generation."

Sounds great! I wouldn't want it in the coupe, though. The V6 is heavy enough.

Like I said in a previous post, the 8 speed auto will quicky become standard in most luxury cars. DON'T GET LEFT OUT GM!!!

More power, less torque, more gears, than Ford. Probably marginally better fuel economy than the Stang, maybe 18/26 or something.

Who Know the financial status of Hyundai. I want to Know if Hyundai loss money or make
a profit 2009 fiscal year. How about 2010 first quarter.
Honda leave his v8 program for financial problem, Toyota has many cars in hold and they
sold twice or three cars than Hyundai.

If this means the 5.0 is REPLACING the 4.6, then this might make A LITTLE sense.

They are going to put the 5.0 in the Equus. So why get the Equus for $20k more?

It would make too much sense to leave the 4.6 in the Genesis, and reserve the 5.0 for the LWB Equus

The market will already be looking for reasons to buy a $60k Hyundai. And they're looking to take reasons away?

The Genesis sedan only sells 1000 a month. Why offer a V6 and two V8s?
Hyundai obviously has a lot to learn about selling luxury cars.
And they seem dedicated to learning from trial and error, and ignoring successful competitive programs.
The marketing and strategy should be the easy part
They make it seem like Keystone Cops!

the Equus is supposedly going to be a luxury barge like the LS460, with just as much space. the Genesis is more ES350 or GS350/460 in terms of space and comfort. in fact, the Genesis is probably more like the GS in that it is RWD and has a ride that really isnt very good.

the 5.0L might not be a good choice for the coupe, but that doesnt mean that the 4.6 isnt...

Coupled with a 1000 hp motor in a honda accord sized body...with a 22" wide nav screen, baby seal leather interior, ipod/iphone/ipad interfaces, super special awd drive, with 18 separate temp zone controls, a 5000 watt 16 channel stereo, 32 airbags, facial recognition security software allowing one to forgo any kind of key, a gastric sensing device able to determine if one is hungry and then call up suggested local restaurants based on a diet software as the seats measure your body fat index, coupled with software that will communicate with your home and spouse indicating your level of arousal and the type of lingerie she should be wearing upon your arrival. Just can't wait.

As a car enthusiast I find this interesting in a good way. As a hot-rodder I find this the cherry on top of a disturbing trend. It was not many years ago when if you had 400+ hp in a street car you were a bad mother... Now the Hyndai family sedan has 429. It's a good thing old cars still sound and look really cool.

I told you guys about the grille change. I hope its true that the Genesis for 2012 will get a Hyundai Logo on the grille.

That Genesis grille looks sweet, a lot better refinement.

cbubowtie, well if the others think its so bad for a "Hyundai Family Sedan" to get a 5.0 V that pumps out 429 HP. Then where's the others and their respective Balls to push up the ante and make 600 HP the new 400 HP.

Hyundai is proving that it wants to the leader. Their new cars will be the best in every segment you can buy, and at a value too. You would be kind of well... not smart if you pass this up because its a "Hyundai Family Sedan."

429 HP and 376 ft lb torque-that's better than the Maserati Quattroporte's 400 HP V8 with 339 lb ft Torque.

Hyundai: Genesis Sedan, Genesis Coupe, 2011 Sonata, Sonata Hybrid, Sonata Turbo (Hybrid/Turbo due out later this yr?) Tucson, Elantra/Avante. All w/in a 2 yr span..

Kia: Soul, Forte Sedan, Forte Coupe, K7, K5, Sorento, Sportage. All fresh.

Honda: CRZ? Crosstour? Messed up Odyssey? (Accord only so-so imo..)
Toyota: ~10mn vehicle recall. Lawsuits. The Sienna a nice people mover tho

Yes, tables continue to turn in the automotive world.. Never would have imagined this a decade ago..

jm1212, the Genesis sedan is actually larger than the Lexus LS 460 inside. It has 1.2 more inches of total leg room than the Lexus LS (short wheelbase), 3 more inches total leg room than the Lexus GS, and 4.7 more inches total leg room than the Lexus ES. The Genesis is also as wide inside as the LS and wider than the GS or ES and has a bigger trunk than all three.

The Genesis cabin is also significantly larger than the cabins of the Lincoln MKS, the Infiniti M, the Acura RL and TL, the BMW 5-series, Mercedes E-class, and the Cadillac STS. It's slightly larger inside than the Audi A8L, Buick Lucerne, and Chrysler 300 and regular wheelbase BMW 7-series. Only the Mercedes S class, Cadillac DTS, and long wheelbase BMW 7-series match it.

I think Hyundai did a good job aiming this car at people who would have bought a Cadillac Deville or Lincoln Town Car 15 years ago. The Genesis isn't as big as those sedans were, but in terms of space it's the biggest $40,000 semi-luxury sedan you can buy. If the Equus adds another few inches of length and width to the cabin, it will be the biggest sedan you can buy this side of a Maybach.

According to Car and Driver the HP/torque ratings are Hyundai's own estimates; the actual SAE ratings could be even higher (or lower).

They also said that this tranny is NOT ZF sourced but was developed in house . . . impressive to say the least.

For Hyndai's financial summary, please refer to the following link.
http://investing.businessweek.com/research/stocks/financials/financials.asp?ticker=005380:KS
You can look up both annual and quarterly income statement.

The target volume of Equus in US Market for the upcoming 1-2 years is relatively small, and the release of LS460 class flagship machine from Hyundai is rather symbolic and experimental at this moment. Also the segments of Genesis and Equus are well divided by their concepts and price ranges. Therefore the sales interference between the two hyundai's will be minimal in US market even though there will be a slight overlap in the engine lineup. Hyundai needs to be more concerned on Genesis competitiveness in its own segment and that's the way we see 4.6 is being replaced by 5.0 engine, instead of having two V8's.

Regarding cz_75's comment:
Hyundai has been gaining its reputation, but (potential) customers perception on Hyundai is not as solid as Japanese brands when they spinned off their luxury brands. It might be safer for hyundai to spin off luxury brand after hyundai gets into the market leader group position in most practical automobile segments up to full size family sedan.

hyundaismoke: I fear you misinterpretted what I was saying. To clear things up...

As reported, classic Corvette L88 just sold for $400k+. L88 Corvette was rated at 430 hp, and ran approximately 14.0 in the quarter mile. Now the Hyudai family sedan (yes the sedan not the sporty coupe, and I'm pretty sure it's not marketed as a sports sedan either) has 429 hp and probably runs the quarter in under 14 seconds (the 4.6 did it in 14.0). Getting beat by a big sedan from a bargain manufacturer in your bad ass Corvette will make you feel a whole lot less bad ass. And while it's cool that new cars are available with rediculous power outputs, I sure hope the 600 hp cars stay an exclusive thing. Most drivers can barely handle driving without rearending somebody because they were texting. And to clarify, Caddy, Audi, BMW, and Merc all have sedans that are quickly nearing the 600 hp mark. Good, but scary.

Well csu,

Why cant 850- 1000+ HP become the new exclusive club?

Why cant the Corvette have 1000 HP running on E85 and gets 30 MPG due to Direct Injection, HCCI, Turbos, and Cylinder Deactivation?

I think all of the Luxury Sedans need to move up to 400-600HP.

turtle99,

Hyundai is being moved upmarket, while KIA is taking Hyundai's place as the Cheap car brand. Hyundais will still be a steal, but KIAs will take Hyundai's place as the bargian economy car brand.

New Hyundai Lineup by Q1 2012

Accent=Cheap MINI Cooper-They benchmarked
Elantra=Cheap A3--They benchmarked
Sonata=Cheap C-Class-They benchmarked
Azera=Cheap 3 Series-They benchmarked
Genesis=Cheap 5 Series-They benchmarked
Equus=Cheap 7 Series-They benchmarked

Every last one of these cars will have the same or better HP than their Luxury Counterparts. Like Chyrsler in the days when it was a low cost Mercedes. You still compete with Economy cars on the price points, but you compete with luxury brands on the feature point

Dont you get it "Intelligent Luxury" like John Krafick said. Hyundai is using its old strategy from Economy cars. You pick the best in the class and you try to best it while charging criminally insane prices for it. Not only that, but since Hyundai is competing in the Economy car Bracket in terms of price the Economy cars will never be able to compete because of Hyundai's features, and the Luxury cars will never be able to compete on price. That will force the luxury brands to get even better, and that will force the Economy car Brands to drop the prices to dirt cheap levels, or it will force many of those Economy car brands to become near luxury brands opening the door even more for China/India.

Why do you think V-Dub is dropping those prices? They see Hyundais "Intelligent Luxury" as a threat. Look at a Jetta interor and tell me thats competitive with a Corolla? I bet you sure wont think that either. Look at an Elantra Spyshot interior and try to tell me that's not going to give the Jetta and maybe even base spec A3s a run for their money.

VW doesnt want to admit they are scared of Hyundai.

Punks!!!

B Segment Accent=C Segment Forte Pricing
C Segment Elantra=D Segment Optima Pricing
D Segment Sonata= Sorento Pricing

That way Rio can take over as the company cheap car, and KIAs will be cheaper than Hyundai's pricing, options, etc....

Recently I successfully went deer hunting with my 2004 M3 near Corning, NY. The car sustained only minor cosmetic damage, but was forced to spend a week in a body shop. Much credit goes to the awesome brakes on the car, as I was going glose to 70mph when Bambi decided to cross. I also have a Nissan Titan in the stable, and I know that thing would have barely slowed down over the same distance. During the time my car was in the shop I had drive to PA with one of my coworkers. We drove my wife's 4.6 Genesis on the trip since it was freezing cold and the Titan lacks such niceties as heated seats. This was only the second time I had driven the car since we purchased it two monts prior and the first time I put any real miles on it. I have to say that Hyundai really has a gem with this car. It is no BMW, but on the 2 lane backroads along the western PA/NY boarder it certainly wasn't lost. The power was plenty adequate for passing the slow pokes, and the car had every feature I could have asked for. This will never be the sports car that my M3 is, but with another 50 hp I can't think of a better daily driver, espicially for the price. Maybe if you live in the city and have to deal with tight spaces this car might not be so appealing; but I live in small town USA so that isn't a problem for me. Bravo Hyundai!! Keep building cars like this and all of those naysayers out there will have to eat their words. Certainly they still have a ways to go, but the other imports and domestics need to watch out, espicially if Hyundai makes it's other products this good.

Who ever thinks that it is dumb to offer the same engine in multiple models clearly doesn't see that BMW, Mercedes, and most other luxury car manufacturers put the same engine in multiple models. I.e; BMW 335i, BMW 535i, and BMW 740i all have the same 3.0L I-6 turbocharged engine. The 550i and BMW 750i have the same 4.4L turbo charged V-8. Mercedes Benz offers the same 6.3L v-8 in most of their AMG models, (C63, E63, S63). The purpose of offering a 5.0L V8 in the genesis a well as the Equus, is to offer people who like a more performance oriented engine choice in a smaller less explains car. People don't buy 550i BMW's because it has the same engine choice as the 7 series. But because they prefer a
More powerful car that is smaller and more nimble. Therefore, the choice of Hyundai to offer the 5.0 across multiple models is a very smart choice in my eyes. Luxury car buyers when looking to buy a car usually buy cars based on what competitive luxury cars they also are looking at. If someone wants an S class Mercedes they usually don't go to Lexus and buy the GS series because the 4.6 liter engine is offered. They would most likely buy the LS due to it's similar size of the S class.

zrated says:

While more horsepower is always appreciated, isn't Hyundai going against the inevitable
downsizing of displacement-power due to tightening fleet MPG standards?
A turbo V6 would make more sense...

mov3_ovr says:

07:28 PM, 06/27/10

Not that anyone will read this now that the article has been up, but here is something to think about "zrated."

2010 Mustang V6 MT: 17mpg city/26 hwy
2011 Mustang GT MT: 17/26

A new V8 is not necessarily going to be worse on fuel. The old GT (2010) does 15/23 and it is a smaller engine. BMW's turbo six is rated around 17/26 too depending on the application so it isn't really any better either (granted it is an older engine now) and it is 100+ hp down. That eco boost thing Ford is putting in the new SHO is actually rated at something like 17/25 and it is even less powerful than the bimmer. This is all kind of hazy because the cars here are all different sizes and weights but the idea is that a turbo six may not be that much better than a V8. Really though with the new standards both the turbo six and the eight will probably see some drastic changes, if they even manage to hang around. Say hello Mercedes S150 and S200AMG (delivering a stunning 65HP and 50 lb-ft!!! :) :) :)

You MUST own a lot of Hyundai..s and you must love them to death. Hyundai has not bench marked anything "yet"except they are close with their new sonata (when you compare with Camry,accord,malibu,altima and such..not there yet though...). Now when we talk about value for your money it will make sense to poor people or those who want to save money..or who can't afford large spaced sedans like lets say the S class, Audi A8 has...But want space without having the performance and prestige of lets say an S class can offer. If you need a medium luxury car with a lot of space and is affordable, The The genesis is one of the best bets. If I was buying an acura Rl or infinit M, then I would maybe try hard to think about the genesis.
It surprises me when people who have owned Hyundai think that Hyundai is better than the European benchmarks.

Hyundai is on a roll. They make realy good looking cars. the new elantra is spectacular, making the Has-to-finaly-get-the-market-one-day Cruze dated. The Genesis, for having driving it is a great car. A little bling-bling for my own taste, but still graet for the customers they look for.
The new engine will be great in the genesis, but I would have keep it for the Equus, Hyundai need to make that car distinc if they want chance of succes with. Buyer won't be looking for a stretch version of the Genesis. Style has to be more distinct also.

I had the opportunity to drive the Genesis 5.0 this past weekend. I was pleasantly surprised by the car. Considering this is not the R-Spec version, it handles fairly well for a sedan this size. The 5.0 had all the power I needed, although it did not flaunt that power. It came on very smoothly and subtly, rather than in a pin-you-to-your-seat fashion. I enjoy the latter, but it is not really the personality you expect in a luxury sedan. The 8 speed was smooth enough that I really didn't notice shifts.
