A couple weeks ago we got our best glimpse yet of the refreshed 2011 Dodge Charger. It was such a clean look, we wouldn't be surprised if it was a setup. But who cares? We got to see the new face of the Charger, which isn't all that different from the old face of the Charger. It's a refresh after all, not a complete redesign.
It did, however, give us enough to generate this photo illustration of the complete car, especially since Dodge has been kind enough to throw out a few hints over the last year or so.
As you can see, this version of the Charger will incorporate more heritage cues from the original Charger coupe. Whether it works or not is up to you, we think it a pretty solid improvement given that this isn't a full redesign.
There will be plenty of changes under the hood too. Chrysler's new Pentastar V6 will take over as the base engine. The slightly larger 3.6-liter V6 will not only generate nearly 300 horsepower, it will still manage to deliver at least 25mpg according to Dodge. The 5.7-liter V8 will remain while the SRT model is expected to get a 6.4-liter V8 with around 450-hp.
Production of the 2011 Dodge Charger is slated to begin late this year, so you should see this Charger in dealerships in January.

I hope whoever prepared this best guess rendering (apparently not Mr. Chin this time) is wrong.
Based on this illustration the Charger back seat will be useless for anybody over about 5-6. This is a large 4-door sedan, it should comfortably seat 4 full size American adults. They don't have to be 4 NBA power forwards, but is a back seat roofline that can accommodate a 6-4 adult too much to ask for?
Once again I feel the loss of the G8 GT acutely. Not only was it a performance bargain, I (the previously mentioned 6-4 adult) could sit behind a drivers seat adjusted for me and my knees didn't touch the seat back and my head didn't hit the ceiling. It was a perfectly sized car.

from the look of the rendering, there still appears to be plenty of room for adults in the back seat - notice the high beltline - a nice Trompe-l'œil effect.
It certainly looks to mave more room then these newest crop of '4-door sports cars' and crossovers that are all the rage right now from Germany - VW CC, Mercdes CLS, BMW X6, etc

I gotta admit I almost like it. Then again I almost like the current one. In a world of beige Honda Accords and Camry's having a four door aggressive looking car is a nice change of pace. It might not be for everyone but for those who wants a Mustang with a back seat this is the car.

Given that the problem with the Charger has always been its quality, the question that should be asked is whether this "new look" comes with better quality or not.

I wish those side slots matched up better with the headlights. Dunno... I know it's just a 'shop, but it feels like it just needs to work a little better.

I believe next generation Dodge Charger R/T Coupe retro on original next gen Dodge Charger four doors. if Mr Norm need learn Plymouth Road Runner will version of Dodge Charger coupe. I knew Plymouth is discontinued in 2001. I knew Mr Norm have make 2010 Plymouth Cuba version of original retro Dodge Challenger. I expect Mr Norm will make edition limited of "Plymouth Brand" for one of 500.

I love the new lines. We all miss the G8, but I will take one of these without too much remorse.

I reckon that this car should have been designed to look like a 2-door coupe. In other words, increase the length of the front doors, and have the shortened rear doors "suicide", as per Mazda RX-8. I love the aggressive look that Dodge has.

And, the ability to delete the ridiculously tacky-looking spoiler on the back?

And 25mpg? Really? Chevy/Ford have proven that you can get a 300hp and 30mpg combo, so 25mpg just isn't gonna cut it anymore. I mean ATLEAST give us 28 mpg or something

So what do you drive that is so superior? I think it looks good but almost too aggressive. As for back seat room I'm 6'6 and had no trouble fitting in the back of the current Charger and 300C.

This is a decent update until the current platform is replaced.
As far as mileage goes, I drove my R/T from Bakersfield to San Diego (60-67 mph) and it
averaged 29mpg. It runs on 4 cyl. at that speed. S.D. to Phoenix= 28 mpg. Who needs a
V-6?
Reliability- a screw in sensor replacement and A/C reprogramming in 4 years;acceptable,
I think. Yeah, it's not the car for everyone.... but what is???

if this is close, it looks like they intend to fix the slab sides and rear end, which are the weak parts (and that's a lot) of the current design. it'll be a good looking sedan (less the wing).
at least it's not the new VanillaWagen Jetta.

I'm really hoping they utilize this platform for the next Avenger. I don't think it would be much less roomy or much heavier, and more importantly it would give people a reason to buy one. A V8 Avenger would be awesome, and would be better competition to a Mustang than the land yacht Challenger.

I sat in the back seat of a friend's 2009 Charger and I almost passed out. Talk about pathetic. If you sit with your back against the seat, you get to see nothing but the inside of the car. I felt like I was in a coffin. It was a miserable ride. Will it fit 2 adults back there? Certainly. Even 3 can fit. Will they want to be back there? No way. It's a 4 door coupe IMO.

Sergio Marchionne ordered targeted refreshes for almost the whole Chrysler line due this fall. They want to keep consumers interested until the replacement models arrive. The Charger gets styling cues influenced by the 68 model, with interior upgrades as well. The actual finished product just might look good. The power train lineup should be very competitive, and quality improvements are promised. I wish them the best.

I think this one looks much better than the current car. Much more athletic instead of just bulky. And quit worrying about the back seat. If you want a big backseat, get the 300. The Charger is supposed to be inbetween the 300 and the Challenger for size. What's next, people complaining about the rear seat headroom in a Mustang, Camaro, or 911?
darthbimmer says:
02:24 PM, 06/16/10
The rising beltline is good. It's a design cue that distinguishes the car from the 300 and hearkens back to the classics of the 60s and 70s. It suggests there might be ample room in the trunk -- an unsexy but important thing in a full size cruiser.
I'd like the front end better if it were toned down a bit. Flatten out that "W" shape. Keep it menacing but make it slightly understated.
Finally, I hope the sheet metal on the front door looks nothing like this 'Shop illustration. The design police might have to make an arrest there.

Looks pretty good to me. The main issue with this car and many other american cars (Such as the base V8 G8) is that they promise performance but only offer an automatic transmission. How about you be different and offer and manual trans. If so you would be so much different than anything else in the class. Its not like you dont have a capable manul trans from the challenger to do it. What would it hurt for them to offer all 3 engines (espically V8 and SRT) with a manual transmission? These would sell too because plenty of Cahllengers, Mustangs, and Camaros are going out with a stick. Would this not be a perfect second car for someone who has a challenger or even a jeep SUV? This is where the american ar compaines (besdies Ford) keep falling short. How about some thinking outside the box for once and not assuminumg what people want instead of giving them more options.
dfschim says:

bankerdanny you are right about the poor rear seat head room but the solution is not to moan about the loss of Pontiac. You can get the same exact car as the Charger with good rear seat headroom at your Chrysler dealer as the 300.

Hey, I'd have to say that looks good but I'm wondering if it will have the same rear seat space that the current one has? Now I've been spending time following up on Dodge Chargers, but I'd like to see more pics in terms of comparing this one to the current model. This new model seems to be a hot one... But I want all around pics of it.

I own a '69 Charger and in '05 I went on the warpath with Chrysler for them DARING to pimp that stubby lump Intrepid replacement as a "Charger". I wrote letters to the CEOs and the 1st gen "Charger" stylist, Ralph Gilles, where I castigated them for reviving Dodge's most iconic model name and yet showing complete contempt for Dodge's history by NOT including any classic Charger styling cues.
But hey, look at that: the 2011 "Charger" has the same long curve from the quarter panel to the door and the same U-shaped depressions in the hood as my Charger. Too bad the front now looks like a pissed-off Dakota--can't win 'em all.
So imagine the schadenfreude as I wrote Gilles last week and needled him about me being RIGHT ALL ALONG.

Well, lets look a what OEM's are designing for rollout this year. You have the Honda CR-z (just plain wierd) Honda Odyssey, front, side, and back deigners evidently dont work on the same continent. Nissan Leaf and Juke? WTF is that all about? POS drug induced vomit-mobiles. I would take the Dodge Chrager in a heartbeat.

The Dodge Charger is one of the few cars that can survive on the same design with somewhat minimal changes. The Dodge Intrepid like rear decklid and maybe a slightly more inspiring interior are about the only changes this thing needs. From the front it looks great. What about the back????

I would rather see future Dodge models draw more inspiration from some of their sleeker 90's concept cars, and the original Viper. This blocky, unrefined, wannabe butch styling theme they got going on looks really cheap and unrefined, and extremely played out.
