Inside Line tests hundreds of vehicles a year, but not every vehicle gets a full write-up. The numbers still tell a story, though, so we present "IL Track Tested." It's a quick rundown of all the data we collected at the track, along with comments direct from the test drivers. Enjoy.
Yes, we have a 2009 Dodge Viper SRT-10 in our long-term test fleet. Recently, it finished 2nd in "Part Duh" of our Burnout Super Test series after laying down a strip of rubber 278 feet long.
The next question, of course, is just what kind of numbers can a car with 600 horsepower, 560 pound-feet of torque and 345/30ZR19 rear tires put down at our test track?
Make the jump, and we'll show you our instrumented-testing numbers plus a video of the Viper's track session.

Handling Rating: Excellent
Db @ Idle: 58.5
Db @ Full Throttle: 86.1
Db @ 70 mph Cruise: 74.0
Acceleration Comments: This is so cool. 11.6 @ almost 126 mph with virtually no wheelspin. Wow! Don't rush 3rd gear, however, or you'll find that its synchro isn't happy. Otherwise, the Viper hits 60 mph in 1st gear and goes through the quarter-mile in 3rd gear.
Braking Comments: Immediate pedal. No fade. Very consistent.
Handling Comments: Slalom: Very high limits and impressive stability. Very secure and even relatively easy sub-limit driving. Attitude doesn't encourage exceeding those limits, though. Skid pad: Balance favors understeer at this speed. No real shift in balance from lift-throttle at this speed, either. Doesn't want to powerslide.

74 mph through the slalom! Nice job, Josh! :o)

The sheet has a 0-60 with 1 foot at 3.2 but the video says 3.4. Which is it?

Yeah that slalom speed has got to be one of the best

With a vehicle like this, I wonder how much the numbers depend on the driver.
I'm assuming it's always a skilled driver and not a dolt like myself.

107 foot braking distance = a very good rating...should we expect more from a near 100k car?
i mean, you guys complain about 120-30 foot distances with cars costing a little over a fourth of this....
anyway, impressive numbers, that slalom speed is pretty epic....and the color of this car is epcially bad.

It's 3.4. Error fixed.

You guys had the car for weeks before you finally decided to get some numbers out of it.
Having said that...
Nice. I'd take this Viper over a ZR1 any day.

so you complain about the burnout results in your previous test, then in this article applaud the Viper for being so sticky and hitting 126 with virtually no wheel spin - isnt the whole point to be the fastest guy in the 1/4 mile and 0-60?

That is nothing short of absolute awesomeness. I already wanted a Viper bad... now I really really have to have one. It sounds SO DAMN GOOD!

That's pathetic driving.
Makes me wonder about this site.
It's no wonder why you guys love "idiot proof" cars like the GTR.

30 years from now these cars will be on the lawn a Pebble Beach. Especially the first gen ones. The under 30 showgoers will marvel at the size of the engine, the tires, the brakes. The old guys (I hope to be there) will explain the joys of high torque engines and what that stick thing in the middle of floor is for.

I totally get buying this car over a GTR or a ZR1. This is a brutal manly car. The others are manly too, but not in such a blunt wat as the viper. The viper is possibly the only real muscle car left. It is kind of ugly, loud, brutally fast, and lovable because it won't be around much longer. I think the last part of the car is what makes it so appealing. There is antiquity with this car while all the other supers seem robotic.
I'd buy one if I had the cash just to let Nancy Pelosi know that car people still exist, and we don't like her.

This is a mean-looking, testosterone-laden, beast. But a beast with voluptuous curves. Bottom line: a beautiful machine which, due to its scarcity, will turn heads forever.
And Chrysler is dropping this car why?

"Don't rush 3rd gear, however, or you'll find that its synchro isn't happy."
6,000 miles, and you're already having synchro problems eh?
Reminds me of how your new Camaro SS needed a new 2nd gear, or how the Challenger's clutch is already going out.

"the joys of high torque engines ..." - that's all that will exist in 30 years, powered by electricity, that is. HP, quality sound and earth shaking idle, that's what'll be missing.

@ 1krider1 whats wrong with an 11.6@125 mph. Seems like a pretty normal time to me. Remember this is a street car, on a street tire, on pump gas, on a non prepared surface. The 0-60 time of 3.7 seconds (3.4 with 1 foot rollout) shows the car is getting off the line well. Probably as well as its going to get off the line.
This isn't some kind of bracket car with drag suspension on a slick cutting 1.3 60 foot times, its a street car, street tire, and probably somewhere in a 1.8-1.9 range.

The ZR1 is $16k more than this SRT-10, but it pulls ACR numbers, while being nicer and more comfortable than even this "regular" SRT-10. So if we were rating on engineering achievement I'd have to give it to the ZR1. But if you WANT it to feel savage and primal, then no doubt the Viper has it.
kevm14 says:
10:45 AM, 05/26/10
By the way the ZR1 stopped from 60 in 96 feet, and had a slightly higher slalom and skidpad result.

I'd take it over the ZR1 too; I just like it's looks that much more. Besides, unless you track 'em, where in the USA could either car be driven anywhere near to their limits?
warriorps182 says:

One of my all time favorite cars. Because this car has no real driving aids like limited-slip or ABS(?) you gotta man up to drive one of these things and I think most people don't have it in them to do so. If you want a really quick car that's sorta frightening then get a ZR1 but if you want a car that will scare the crap out of you, the SRT-10 is the one.
Rage0329 says:
07:07 PM, 05/26/10
Viper has ABS now, but not TCS (traction control system) or ASM (automatic stability management).
ZR1 is a good idea in theory but I reckon it's just way too much power for the Corvette chassis. Probably why it's far more tail happy. At then end of the day if you look at the original '92 Vipers and compare it to a 2010 ACR, you can't help but realise how far the Viper has come.
lt1boy says:
08:44 PM, 05/26/10
I like the ZR1. But it's nothing more than an upgraded C6. If you buy a ZR1, you're going to look like every other Corvette on the road.
The Viper on the other hand, will always be a Viper.
Vipers are for badasses. ZR1s are for fatasses, quite literally.
