2012 Hyundai Elantra Could Be Built in Alabama

hyundai_elantra1.jpg

A report out of a Korea this week suggests Hyundai will start production of the redesigned Hyundai Elantra at its Montgomery, Alabama, plant in April 2011. Though Hyundai officials say no decision has been made on this matter, this would be an entirely reasonable course of events given that U.S.-market versions of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata are built here.

The report also suggests that a redesigned version of the Hyundai Santa Fe would shift production to Kia's West Point, Georgia, assembly plant -- also reasonable given that this medium-size crossover would likely share components with the Georgia-built Kia Sorento.

Sometimes it's hard to see where a stylistic element has gone too far... at the time... but here I can plainly see that pulled back headlights hit the high water mark already, and designs like this and the current Maxima are sure to appear ridiculous in a few years. In 2025, I can envision my kids asking my why a headlight needs to run the full length of the front quarter panel.

Who am I kidding, with the butcher designing Honda's these days the next accord headlight will probably touch the front door and I'll probably still buy one.

Remember when the first Taurus looked so radically aerodynamic way back in '86 and now when (and IF) you see one it looks like a brick?! Remember how the Sable had the full-width light bar across the front-end...and yet it never really caught on? Remember when rectangular sealed-beam headlamps changed everything in front-end styling...and now they're gone? Remember how chrome was BIG in the 50's and 60's then almost totally absent...and now it's BACK?! I like it when designers try something new and I'm usually appreciative of most everything...except those new Acura noses...'you-glee'!!

I tend to admire the hood ornaments and do appreciate the aerodynamics and curvature of the lines........and the car looks good too!
