The Audi A8 L: If You Can Find a Better Back Seat, Sit In It

audi-a8l-show-rint-1600.jpg
The new, long-wheelbase 2011 Audi A8 L not only adds more room for rear passengers, it offers up a substantial list of options designed to make it the most hospitable backseat in the super deluxe luxury sedan class.

You want to watch a movie? Of course, dual DVD screens are optional. You even get individual controls so you can watch different movies on each screen.

How about a massage? Got that too, even comes with a handy little remote control so you can position the pulsing air bladders just right. There's also a refrigerator behind the armrest and individual seat adjustments that include lumber support.

Need to plug in a laptop? No problem there either, just pop out the standard electrical socket from the center console. There's a pop up table too. And an iPod input. And a rear sunroof. You get the picture.

All of it comes standard on the top-of-the-line W12 model, but you can get all the same stuff on the standard V8 version too. Not a bad setup, even if you don't get every option.

Confirmation once again why Audi is regarded as having the best interiors in the auto industry. Absolutely gorgeous.

Speechless.

Very nice, but those screens look like an after thought, could they not have integrated them into the seat a little better.

Will the fridge hold a bottle of Veuve?

The "best backseat" award still goes to the Maybach 62 (I don't see goose-down headrests or champagne flute holders in this Audi), but the Maybach does cost eleventy times more.

Also worth mentioning, the Lexus LS460L/600hL with the exec rear seat package has the reclining massaging right seat with the footrest and most of the same amenities.

Why don't we just call it the best interior in the sub- $250,000.00 category.

"I don't see a single cupholder"

It's a German thing... After a few years with an Audi, I'm loving the 10 cupholders in my Flex! :D

I'm likely the sole dissenting voice but I find the interior gaudy and tacky. It's also bad design. Too many conflicting lines and angles. Too many disparate materials. I expect much more restraint from Audi.

I guess I'm a little surprised by the publicity the A8L has gotten. You can get everything seen here (except the refrigerator, laptop charger, and table) on any S-Class today (or LS460L). AND you would getter better integrated TV screens and climate control vents that might actually blow air on you. I'm not trying to downplay the lovely environment of the Audi, but MB provides a very compelling (and more restrained) package as well that many might find more appealing.

On a side note, am I the only person who absolutely hates the interior design of the new A8? I feel like Audi is starting to pick up too many details from Bentley. That translates to a gaudy and ostentatious design with overly glossy woods and too many contrasting materials. It is just too flashy for me. I have always loved Audi for their understated looks, these days they are becoming the flashiest of the European auto makers.

@ mercedesfan

You must not forget that when the LS460L debuted it received just as much attention, if not more. I would have to say that I disagree with you completely about this new A8’s interior. It looks nothing like a Bentley inside. Other than them both using prodigious amounts of leather, they really share nothing as far as looks are concerned. Also, there is really no comparison when it comes to the rear entertainment. The S-class’s screens fail in comparison to the A8’s.

Um, it IS sweet, but kind of limited in space for anything more than one occupant on each side! ;)
