Spy Photos: Is This the Next Hyundai Accent?

hyundai_spyshot_1.jpg

The quick answer is, no, this is not a Hyundai Accent. Rather, this appears to be an MPV version of one of Hyundai's European-market subcompacts, perhaps the i20.

But it's no great secret that the Hyundai's current Accent line -- an unassuming sedan and an even more unassuming three-door hatchback -- is not that compelling.

In previous years, it didn't matter what U.S.-market subcompacts (B-segment cars) looked like or drove like, but that seems to be changing. It kind of started with the Honda Fit, and soon the Ford Fiesta and Mazda 2 will be along to continue the trend. All of those cars are shaped about like the five-door hatchback in these photos.

Given the aggressive moves Hyundai has been making with the Sonata as of late, it shouldn't be too long before the automaker turns its attention to its compact and subcompact offerings. When it does, we think it's more likely than not that we'll end up a redesigned Hyundai Accent of the tall, five-door hatchback persuasion.

But will it be based on this car? Hard to say. The short hood on this prototype suggests it might just be too small for the U.S. Only a tiny engine could fit in this car's bay, and once it's in there, meeting frontal crash standards might be an issue. You'll note that photos of the upcoming Hyundai Veloster warm hatch show a car with much longer hood.

I like that you made the point of calling the Veloster a "warm" hatch, not a hot hatch. I havent read up much on the Veloster, but that gives me an idea of what kind of car it will be.

Just search Hyundai i20

It's Hyundai's version of the Kia Venga (http://youngmanmaster.wordpress.com/2009/09/29/kia-venga/)--likely to be called ic20 or ic25.

Weird. More so than the Suzuki SX4.

Actually Erin, I hear of a possbility that an i20 MPV could make it to America as some kind of Accent 5 door hatch. From the Pics, I like it, but I think Veloster which rides on a Custom i20 platform (Which an i20/Soul/Venga platform is just a Modified Current gen Accent/Rio Platform) would be more appropriate as US Accent Hatch. Now, if only they could get an option with 2 doors on each side. Also, since it looks like a KIA Venga Clone, which in Germany they sell 1.6 and 2.0 engines in Vengas as well as the puny 1.4 and 1.2, a 2.0 even in turbo form could fit in this baby.

i20 itself is too small to be Accent. Not like A Segment small, but for Accent Customers it would be going backwards in size as i20 is close to the size of Accent X3 (1995-1999) and Accent LC (2000-2005). Today's pretty sizeable Accent MC is close enough to the size of a Last gen Elantra. The Accent Driver will expect to at least keep the same size going forward.

This is a Hyundai and not some KIA Venga Hybrid, as they have been testing those in Europe already for months.

Hyundai, will you just put Delta shaped mirors on the thing for the US Market if you do decide to Accent-uate the thing? I think some Delta Mirrors would bring the car out even more.

The current Accent "is not that compelling"? Really?

I could have sworn that the Hyundai Accent is what the Lienerts purchased or their teenage son. Paul and Anita are informed experts who sample dozens of cars per year. So if they spent their own money for a vehicle for their own child, then I would say it's a "compelling" vehicle.

Accent is the second hottest seller in its class in America for 2 years in a row too behind Nissan Versa

This i20 is the next gen of the hyundai i10?

The current Accent is a big selller because it's not a bad car and it's really cheap.

With discounts (in Canada) you can buy an Accent for $9999.00. That's a full $5K less then a Fit and $3500 less then a Yaris. The only car that can match the Accent on price is the Aveo (with big discounts as well) and the Accent is a much better car then the Aveo.

5 or 10 years ago Hyundai was content to be just better then the worst but now they can do better. I see no reason they can't aim at the Fit, Fiesta and Mazda2.

Looking forward to see what they have coming.

Firstwagon, if Hyundai Sold Accents in America in the rate that they sell them in Canada, we would sell 3-4 times more Accents. B Cars in America are selling better than 5 years ago, but for a car to sell 4K units a month in that segment is excellent, and anything more is astonishing. Only 5 B-Segment cars can sell that much a month constantly: Accent, Versa, Yaris, MINI, Fit. Here those are the top cars in that segment and anything else, is well anything else.

People arent buying the Cheap Accents in America, see thats the thing. They are buying $13K or higher Accents. My friends in Hyundai Sales say trying to move Accent Blue=the only Accent you can get for under $13K in America is like trying to do the Boston Marathon in a Potato sack. Come on a $9970 car without a radio in the 21st century, I see why there's not that many takers of Accent Blues. Plus on Accent Blue there is no Automatic Tranny even available on the trim. If you want Auto Trans or a Radio, You HAVE to buy the $13K model. The Real Value in Accent is from $13K and up, trust me.

They are buying the cheapest Versa's, and the lower mid to upper trim Accents. The Cheapest Accent is overpriced, the mid trim and upper trims of Accents are dirt cheap considering the options. After about $14K in Nissan Versa the car becomes widily overpriced and little optioned.

Plus both Accent and Versa are 2 the largest cars in the class.

Little known Fact:

When you combine Accent, Rio, and Soul sales Hyundai/KIA is the largest seller of B-segment Subcompacts in America. They sell 120,000-140,000 Subcompacts a year here. If you Combine Yaris and Fit Sales together they still wont add up to Accent, Soul, and Rio sales.

Firstwagon, you must know very little about Hyundai or small cars in general. Theres a perfectly good reason why the Accent Sells more, becuase fundamentally Honda Fit isnt a better car Accent considering what you get from the Accent. For the price of a Fit with Steel Wheels, you have an Accent with Alloys, and a Sunroof. Accent is resonating with Gen Y buyers, the Fit is missing the mark Badly.

The Fit is what I call a Medicare Select Subcompact becuase of its older buyers who arent open minded to Hyundai and arent willing to see real value.

Accent is the best value in the Segment. Versa is a great value on paper, but According to JD Power Vehicle Dependablity Charts its only HALF as Reliable as Accent. DONT BELIEVE ME, JUST CHECK THE DAMM JD POWER AND SEE VERSA'S ATTROCIOUS 1991 Hyundai Excel like RELIABILITY SCORE!!! The people who research cars buy Hyundais, as they realize many Hyundais have a power and most likely fuel economy advantage too.

ACCENT WILL LEAD THE SMALL CARS IN AMERICA HANDS DOWN, AND BE A NACOTY CONTENDER, AND THIS TIME WIN MOTOR TRENDS COTY. Little Known Fact: Accent was 3rd place in Motor Trends COTY in 2006.

1. Fiesta isnt going to cut it with its Next Gen Elantra Fuel Economy, much less be able to duke out with a Mid 40s MPG Accent.

2. Accent will have 140-145 HP Standard, which 20-30 more HP than everybody else except for Next gen Aveo, Polo, or Juke. I write about small cars I know what the companies are preparing, and Accent will be the Leader.

3. Accent will be a premium small car an at affordable price with Optional Leather etc....

The Accent "is not Compelling" is well Im going to go there, a pretty Elitist statement. The "Mainstream" Automotive Journalists are not fans of this Current Gen Accent, but big deal if Accent isnt liked by them. People do actually internet and window shop these cars. When I bought my Accent in 2007 when gas was $1.80 there was a 2 week waiting list for it in America.

The people like Accent for its uncompromising value, the "Alternative" Journalists' like myself see this value too. Maybe that's why it sells more than the "Mainstream" Journalists' PAID BY TOYOTA AND HONDAs Beloved: Fit, Yaris, etc....?

hyundaismoke says:

cr_driver no. See the story for Accent and i20 is this.

1. Accent was given a 3 year hiatus in Europe in order to promote i20 better, but Next Gen Accent will come back to Europe as i25.

2. i20 is smaller than Accent becuase its not an Accent replacement, its a Getz replacement.

3. i10 is an A Segment car, i20 is a true B segment Car, Accent/i25 is a B/C segment car.

4. Accent is Actually 1.55 inches longer than i30 Euro hatch, believe it or not.

When I spoke of the Veloster, Hyundai came out with preliminary measurements 4 weeks ago under everybody's radar.

Accoding to Hyundai, Veloster will be 4285 MM Long and 1790 MM wide. That makes it 0.2 inches longer and 3 inches wider than Current Gen Accent sedan. Hyundzi was right about it being Accent sized. Believe it or not Veloster in Fact is 1.57 inches longer than i30 Hatch, and 0.59 inches wider than i30 hatch. It is smaller than the Forte Koup, they were right about that. Its 7.7 inches shorter than Forte Koup, but 0.8 inches wider than Forte Koup.

I know a lot about small cars and a lot about Hyundai. I also know alloy wheels and sunroofs do not make a car great. They are just add on features.

We don't get the blue model here. The $13K model you refer too is likely what we get for $9999 after discounts. It doesn't have a radio but that a minor issue. Just put one in yourself, lots to choose from out there. And very few Accents that I have seen have been automatics.

"Accent is resonating with Gen Y buyers, the Fit is missing the mark Badly. "

Honda is selling every Fit it can imports at list price. Hyundai has around $3500 in discounts right now. Not much else to say there.

Like I said in my original post I'm looking forward to what they have coming. I like the current Accent but I like it for the price. If you optioned one up to a Fit then it would be out of it's league.

hyundaismoke says:

KIA Rio will be the cheaper car out of the 2 next gen also. The Rio will be the car with the $10K Version for the time being. It will be positioned under the already reasonably cheap Soul. Hyundai/KIA is doing a Ford Lincoln/Mercury temporarily until they change to VW/Audi. KIA is Ford for the small cars, KIA is Mercury on the Big cars. Hyundai will be like Mercury for Accent, Elantra, Tuscon, Santa Fe, Azera, and Sonata. Hyundai will be like Lincoln For Genesis, Equus, Veracruz, the Secret Genesis Truck, and the Secret RWD Sedan they are developing.

Why would Hyundai do that? Well KIA hasnt announced yet, but they are going to be moving upmarket too over the long haul. Cadenza is not an Amanti Replacement, its a Brand spanking new Car. The Real Amanti Replacement will be based on the Genesis, and will be KIAs Luxury Flagship. That will be a 2013 Model, probably out in 2012.

By 2015-2020: Accent, Elantra, Sonata, Azera, Tuscon, Santa Fe will be moved further upmarket to be identical to the Genesis Equus, etc... According to Ward's Hyundai plans on expanding the Equus Services like the IPOD, etc to all of its cars from Accent on up. They plan on trickling the services down over time. Hyundai CEO wasnt joking around last year when he said he wants to grow Hyundai into a maker of some of the best Luxury cars on Earrh. They arent trying to convert customers from current luxury brands, they want us young folk to grow us into the idea of Hyundai=Premium Brand.

Firstwagon, The $13K US Accent has a Radio C/D w Jack standard, and a FRRE choice of Auto trans as standard. Its not the price, its what the Accent has at the price it is, is behind the primary reason why people buy the car here. Hyundai is trying to cut back on incentives, so the $9970 Accent Blue is another way to cut back the incentives.

On the next Gen, Hyundai has new suppliers they have learned ways to use high grade materials mostly seen in VWs and Audis products and at a super reduced cost. A $14K and above Accent will be equipped like a MINI that Costs $19-$23K.

The Sonata is a Vastly superior car to Camry, not just becuase of its dynamics and specs. Its also Vastly Superior becuase of new material utilization techniques. Since its built in America they can offer the borderline criminal prices they charge on Sonata too. Accent will be continued to be produced in Ulsan, until they find a suitable North American location. They wanted to move Accent production to Mexico, but us hardcore Accent Enthusiasts protested on fears of diminished build quality.

These new Hyundais arent just upgrades, they are rolling Revolutionary Changes and Masterpieces.
