Spy Photos: 2012 Chevrolet Aveo 5-Door Caught

Aveo 5 door f34 1600.jpg

Improbable as it may seem, it appears that Chevrolet will, in fact, produce a good-looking Aveo.

We offer as evidence these new spy shots of the 5-door version of the little runner, sans cladding. The prototype evidences the same attractive bobbed-tail look as the Aveo RS Concept but without the show-car filigree. The Aveo's nose retains the big hexagonal grille and the same inset headlamps, that make this little hatch look a bit perturbed.

Obviously, Chevrolet is going to have to increase the size of the wheel-and-tire package if it wants the 5-door to be taken seriously in the hot-hatch class, as the company has hinted it would like. If that's true, we're going to be expecting Chevy to offer a version of the turbocharged four that will power the Cruze.

We can say for sure that we prefer this vehicle to the illustration that Chevrolet released of the Aveo sedan.

The current Aveo is a distant 3rd behind the Rio and the Accent in the bargain basement category because of how it drives, not because of how it looks. (embarrassing for the worlds biggest car maker).

I'll wait and see but I'm not holding my breath that this will compete with the Fiesta, Mazda2 and Fit.

right because the probability of a good looking Versa or Yaris is MUCH higher. The subcompact hatch segment is chock full of drop dead gorgeous cars.

You're right about the Versa and the Yaris, not real lookers. However the Fiesta and the Mazda2 look cool, the Fit is funky and the new Fiat 500 is great.

The Aveo should aim for the best, not the worst. As you say the Cruze is going after the masses who don't care about what they drive so why shouldn't they aim the Aveo at those who do?

The hatch looks kind of the same as the current one (overall shape and rear hatch) with the exception of the front end and the rear doors. It looks like it dropped that prominent "i wanna look like an expensive european" audi-esque prominent grill that made it look like some part that someone would buy to make their 300 look like an old Bentley/Rolls.

1. The mazda2 is yet another awkward, forgettable subcompact hatch
2. The 500 isnt on sales yet
3. fiesta looks about as good as one can hope for in this segment
4. Fit only looks decent with the larger wheels. With the wheelcovers it looks like its prone to roll over. Its not attactive, just inoffensive.
5. Few people buying in this class care about driving. This segment is about price and mileage. Most enthusiasts aren't going to be shopping for a hatch with less than 120hp.
