Spy Photos: 2011 Honda Odyssey Caught Testing in the Desert

ody-f34-1600.jpg
Remember the Honda Odyssey concept shown in Chicago awhile back? Well, here's the production version all wrapped in camouflage. A couple prototypes were caught resting in this lovely parking lot at Buffalo Bill's casino about an hour outside Las Vegas.

As you can see, not much changes from the concept. Those headlights look a little more conventional and the wheels are worthy of pavement duty, but everything else looks untouched.

Honda didn't mention any drivetrain details when it showed the Odyssey concept and these prototypes don't really give any hints. Given the size of this van, however, a V6 is almost guaranteed. Honda didn't mention some mileage targets that suggest a fuel sipper model, but there's no evidence of that here.

Expect to see the finished 2011 Honda Odyssey in dealers by the end of this year.

There's a typo near the top. The linked part says "Honda Odyseey concept", but should say "Honda Odyssey concept".

compared to other automakers, honda is pretty resistant in the idea to hide the sliding door tracks under the rear windows. what gives?

And perhaps transmission this time will actually be able to go past 70,000 miles without a failure. Honda's transmissions when coupled to their V6 engines have been notoriously unreliable. I don't understand why is it so difficult for Honda to design a reliable transmission. I have 2008 Odyssey and (knock on wood) so far so good, but even this generation had torque converter and tranny recalls etc.

I am with Carl0ver, if Chrysler can make a minivan with "hidden" door tracks, Honda sure as heck should be able to...

Evil Toyota got our $ for the 2011 Sienna. And it did "hide" the door tracks now. AWD is almost like a status symbol in NE -- very easy to get suckered into it. Hehe

As a current Odyssey owner it looks like I have....almost nothing to look forward to.
But then again, a breadbox on wheels is a breadbox on wheels, I just don't like 6-spoke wheels. I suppose it will be more refined, drive well, and have excellent safety ratings, and that's all you can really ask for out of a people mover. I hope the tranny and motor mounts last on this one, I'll be looking for one in a year or two, and by then it should be past the usual Odyssey first model year jitters.

As long as it doesn't end up looking like the CrossDork, it's a thumbs up from me.

Looks like the Honda design team took inspiration from the Kia Sedona (door handles) and Nissan Quest (roofline and beltline). It looks good, IMO.

Hmmm... looks just like a minivan. Albeit much better than the Caravan or Town and Country. Both the new Toyota and the Honda have decently non-offensive looks to them. Nothing special, but hey! It's a minivan for crying out loud. Not your VW GTI. I expect a GTI to look cool and mean. Not bland and unspecial...

Honda is resistent to change in general. Look at the Pilot for cues... will basically just upgrade whats already there, bump 10hp, bump 1-2 mpg... somewhat restyle the headlamps, grill and headlights....call it a day... but your right ..at least they didnt give it a Crosstour grill. With the resdesigned insight and crosstour last year, I think they need a big seller in the Odyssey, CRZ and Civic this year

actualsize says:

Anyone check out the size of that trailer hooked behind the OTHER one in the second and third photos? Does that look like more than 3,500 lbs to you?

And the non-hidden door track is necessary to get the wedge-shape of the lower glass line. Should look less box-like as a result. A visible track might be worth that trade-off.

Looks like they finally give in and put a grab handle on the b-pillar. Good for them.

Still the best looking Honda on the market. They are not trying to be different but I think most people will agree Honda doesn't do different very well.

Keep it smooth and clean, not weird.

I see mixed comments on the Odyssey quality
I have a 2001 Osyssey, just passed 90k miles and runs fine. Every year it needs a few hundred $$ in maint and repair (from battery and tires to EGR valve and exhaust pipes) but it's held up well to kids, climate (I live in MA) and trips to the home center. Nothing beats a minivan for the functionality which is the #1 objective here. Style is nice, but it comes in 2nd in this class of vehicle.
One thing I do not like about the current gen Odyssey is the (aging) 5-speed auto trans, glad to see Honda finally moving up to 6 in newer vehicles (2011 Odyssey included).

I will never understand why people are so against minivans. Well I can understand because I was one of them until I had two kids and need to get them in and out of the car all the time. The best thing is the sliding doors. Gives you so much more room and you don't have to worry about hitting the car next to you. It also gives you so much room for carrying things in the back over crossovers. I have an 06 sienna and love it. I do not think it is ugly but realize I will not be picking up any women in it and that is fine because I already have one. I will reserve comments on oddyssey but the reason why i went with the sienna is because I know five people who have them and have had problems with the trannys. Also knew a guy with an accord and blew his tranny in it to so they evidently have issues especially in 06 era. The thing I wish the sienna had was the stow and go storage that dodge has and I don't think they are bad looking either but again I am not trying to impress anybody just want functionality. To me it is immature way of thinking to base a vehicle just on looks.

It's pretty sad when an upcoming minivan is the most exciting product in a company's line-up. Looks like they somehow managed NOT to screw up this minivan after CRZ and Crosstour fiascos.. Kudo for that

All I want is this car with the Honda 2.2L diesel. 250 ft-lb of torque will get it up and moving just fine. I don't need 250+ hp in a minivan, just lots and lots of torque!

steve_ says:

I agree Zotz - maybe it's just the camo, but the roof line said Quest to me too. I like the back end.

I have a friend with the latest model Honda Van...not much wrong with that one. I don't get the change, just for changes sake.

technetium99 says:

Will they also sell the plastic camo pieces that are hiding the horrid Harry Potter lightning flashes on the belt line? If not, someone might make a small fortune selling them on aftermarket.

borodi says:
