Hyundai quietly introduced some pretty significant hardware at the Beijing auto show -- a direct-injected version of its Lambda V6, a direct-injected 1.6-liter four-cylinder and an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Rather than installing them in the show cars, Hyundai release these three information videos on the new engines and transmissions. Notably, the direct-injected V6 appears in longitudinal form, so it's likely to show up in the rear-wheel-drive Equus, Genesis sedan and Genesis coupe before any of Hyundai's front-drive cars. And it's a good bet that eight-speed automatic would go with it, seeing as how the company has only a six-speed auto in those cars right now.
Curiously, the power graph in the video only shows a 302 PS rating for the GDI V6 -- which comes out to only 296 hp which is less than what the Genesis Coupe makes now. We'll assume different states of tune are possible.
The GDI 1.6-liter inline-4 is a big deal, too. The video shows a 140 PS rating for this direct-injected four-cylinder, which comes out to 138 hp -- quite an upgrade over the 110 hp Hyundai gets out of our current Accent's port-injected 1.6-liter engine. We expect to see this engine used in both the Accent and Elantra, plus some Kias. Also, look for it in the 2012 Hyundai Veloster, as Hyundai America CEO John Krafcik has said that the sporty hatch will get a direct-injected 1.6-liter making around 140 hp.
Hyundai also noted in its Beijing press release that the 1.6-liter GDI could be turbocharged for some applications, and paired with a dual-clutch automated manual transmission.

does the announcer take a breath?
Or is it a computer voice...

The current Accent doesn't have a 1.8l engine--it's a 1.6l. But 138hp is approximately what the Elantra's 2.0l makes. And why is a Korean company citing power outputs in pferdestaerke?

The new Accent is attractive, but if it is going to get 138 HP, shouldn't the Elantra get a bit more, at least?
I am really thinking that the Elantra Touring should get a more powerful engine. It has a large storage area, and would, with the current 2.0, probably be very slow when fully loaded. Even the 2.4 would be better, but a 210 HP 2.0 Turbo would be even better.

1. Next Gen Elantra will get 1.6 GDi only in gas sipper/less hp countries, such as China and Korea .
2. US Spec Next Gen Elantra will have a 2.0 GDI base Powertrain which will give it power in the 170s at least, and believe it or not it will have the same or even more power than 2006-2010 Sonata
3. The power output in this video for the 1.6 GDI speaks of 140 ps Torque (Which is a weird way to Measure Torque, but oh well) Thats 138 SAE Torque, not 138 HP. Autoblog confirms US Spec Accent to have more than 140 HP by chasing it. They meausred Torque in PS for the Video. Pause the video and carefully look at the graph. Its a Torque Reading, not Power Reading. My Hyundai Sources say 145-150 HP on the Accent.
You can say whatever you want About Hyundai's TOP grade plastic induction system, but it serves a purpose, as Hyundai is set to kill the industry in Fuel Economy. Just by making it with high strength plastic saves weight, thus saves MPG. It also kills that stupid typical Hyundai Obstructionist Cat thats on the Headers on current iterations of these vehicles=even more power.
That leaves room in for Hyundai to put a car like i20 under Accent if they wanted to.

I hate to burst the Fiesta Lover's Bubble, but this Accent is 10.8 inches longer than Fiesta 5 door too.

The 4 door Fiesta is a foot longer than the 5 door, which seems contra-intuitive. I thought hatchbacks were supposed to provide more utility than a sedan. If I were in the market for a Fiesta, I would buy the sedan. And I would save money.
But, the idea of 170HP in the Accent or Elantra is intriquing. Good times coming for small car lovers who want some decent performance with their good gas mileage.

There's a chart in the V6 video showing its making 262PS in MPI form. That means it's the 3.3L V6 that's the base in the Rohens (Genesis) sedan in China. The Coupe uses the 3.8L V6, though we may see a GDI version of it too.

Im trying to get them to do a 3.8 GDi Turbo on that coupe. Im trying to get them to offer a GDI turbo for the 4.6 V8 too.

Smoke, Any idea when the GDI will be added to the Touring? And a far shot, but estimated highway mpg? I figure with the Sonata at 35mpg, the ET should get at least 38, right? The current ET mpg is the only thing keeping me from ordering one since I can just smell the GDI application here.
