2012 Porsche Boxster Lifts a Wheel on the Nurburgring

2012_porsche_boxster1.jpg

German photographers met up with the redesigned 2012 Porsche Boxster again on the Nurburgring. Most of the camouflage is off now, so apart from the taillights, this is pretty much how the next Boxster will look.

Obviously, it doesn't look a great deal different from the current Porsche Boxster, but when you're charged with creating a mid-engine convertible with classic Porsche styling, well, there are only so many ways the car can look. The really radical changes in this car might well be in the engine compartment anyway, as we've already seen video of a turbocharged four-cylinder Boxster testing on the 'Ring and we've heard talk of even a three-cylinder version.

We seriously dig the way this 2012 Boxster prototype is lifting the inside front wheel, suggesting that Porsche engineers have left nothing on the table in tuning its suspension for track work. You'll note that the prototype is wearing different wheels in these photos, further suggesting that the chassis engineers were out at the Nordschleife trying out different tire compounds and wheel/tire packages.

Expect the new-gen 2012 Porsche Boxster to start production sometime next year.

Wow. It looks just like the old boxster! What a shock.

Are you guys aware of the Nurburgring? There are two corners with a seriously banked corner, and that car is flying off the top of one of them. It's not lifting a wheel 5" up... That idiotic to even say.

Can't think of many jobs better than being a Porsche development engineer. "I going on a business trip to ring, leave me a message"

Lots of cars lift an inside wheel in Der Karossel.

Either that or the new Boxster will have hydraulics!

@roadburner: Correctamundo. But, to be technically accurate, in that turn it's more a case of the road falling away (steeply) than actual wheel lift. A half second after this and all four wheels will be smashed against the springs while the driver feels more than a little spinal compression.

When I do get a convertible, a used Boxster is pretty high on the list.
