We've actually driven the Audi A7 Sportback concept car, but to date, we've never gotten a good look at the actual 2011 Audi A7 production car. Sure, we've spotted it up on a lift in a garage somewhere in Germany and ripped off a few quick shots as it was speeding by on a country road, but we've never seen anything sharp.
That changes today, as spy photographers caught an Audi A7 prototype strolling the public roads of Germany today. The A7's broad shoulders and and fast roofline are revealed here, as are elements of the head- and taillights. Also visible is the A7's ultra-wide third brake light, which runs nearly the full width of the top of the backlight.
Although we (and you) have viewed the luxury crossover-hatchback phenomenon with skepticism, we wonder if 2011 Audi A7 won't be the vehicle that turns us all into believers. Undoubtedly, the A7 will be a large and weighty creature in production form, but just look at it: This car has the right stance.

Well, for one thing, this looks better because it's not a "crossover", as it appears to have a normal, perhaps even lowered, ride height. And properly handled, the fastback just looks much sportier than a notchback sedan. Would the CC or the new Sonata become uglier if they had proper cargo access? The ZDX and even the Crosstour look OK once you get aft of the front fascia. The problems with the X6 and 550i GT are scale and leftover Bangle heritage.

This car is soooo much cleaner looking styling wise than the BMW 5GT!

It seems the luxury hatchback is the "next big thing", Saab was a head of the curve. Time for a new 9-5 hatch.

There is no denying that it looks like it is going to be a lovely design that thankfully has more Aston Martin Rapide in it than Porsche Panamera. Nonetheless, I can't help but feel like Audi design has plateaued. Nowadays all of their cars look the same just with different body styles. It's time to take some risks and try new things. I'm one who has always loved the Audi design aesthetic, but even I am starting to get bored with their new offerings.

A7 will be priced slighter higher than A6.
No 2.0T for US.
Supercharged 300hp 3.0T is the base engine from what I hear.

Audi has always, always, always conservatively sytled their vehicles, which is why I love them. Clean, classic designs.
I'll take them, even if a tad boring, over all of the newer frumpy bimmers.
