U.S.-Bound Nissan Juke Caught Testing in California

juke_f34_nissan_ns_1.jpg

The 2011 Nissan Juke was shown for the first time in Geneva earlier this week and it looks like the U.S. version is well on its way to final production status. We caught these very finished looking prototypes testing in Southern California just this week.

As you can see, the U.S. version of the Juke looks every bit as controversial as the European model. Same big lights up front, same funky looking rear end. If anything, these street shots reveal just how small the Juke is compared to say, the Toyota Matrix or other such compact crossovers.

The more I see this thing more I think it's neat that they are going to build something so unconventional.

Is Nissan letting you guys stage spy photos for ALL their products? First the 370z 40th ann. car and now this.

I actually think it looks worse in these pictures then it did previously.

Good thing they covered the badges, wouldn't want the spy photogs to know what it is.

that thing is sweet.

Look honey, I shrunk my sense of style!

lmbvette says:

The front end, while being organic, has a striking resemblence to the Pontiac Aztek. Compare the pic below to the first pic of the Juke. Flash back and forth quickly and you'll see what I mean.

http://talkpower.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/pontiac-aztek.jpg

This is quite possibly the ugliest car I've ever seen, and that includes the Aztek.

Not gonna go into my full take on this vehicle yet, but the 6 lights is still bugging me out...

Ribbit, Ribbit

Is there a tongue that flies out from behind the Nissan badge to catch flies?

sunilb says:

Unconventional would be okay, but this has crossed the line and is well into ugly-territory.

ergsum says:

Headlight arrangement reminds me of a Wolf Spider's eyes:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/73/Wolf_spider_focus_bracket02.jpg

Two on top, two bigger ones up front, and a series across the bottom. I think the spider looks better.

andersendl says:

01:53 PM, 03/ 5/10

Dang that thing is hideous! Whoever at Nissan approved it better start looking for a new job, 'cause they wont sell more than 5 of 'em.

smilez says:

02:02 PM, 03/ 5/10

(Don't have the photo, but...) This is an Infiniti EX35, this Juke is an EX35 on drugs.

ergsum says:

Did you ever have a practical joke get out of hand at the office and you never knew when to stop its progress and finally face the consequences. You never say anything as it works it way higher and higher through the corporation until one day you realize that it is too late to stop it. Someone is either dying of shame or of laughter.

stephen987 says:

It's a shame they cut the tusks off that warthog--oh, nevermind, it's a "car"~

ed124c says:

For many years most people have assumed that small car styling was bland and had to be that way because of the lack of space to develop curves, etc. Well, Nissan got around that with deep cuts, curves, swoops, etc.

Come on, give them some credit for daring, and thinking outside the small box that most small cars are locked into.

I like it. It is better looking than the Qube. I guess this is the kind of thing Honda would never do-- unless you include the Element.

orangutan says:

02:25 PM, 03/ 5/10

Give it a small turbo and I'd be pretty interested. I like the funky styling.

roadburner says:

The love child of a Venza and a Neon perhaps?

thejohnp says:

03:29 PM, 03/ 5/10

I don't really like it or dislike it. Then again, I don't think this sucker is being marketing towards me (particularly since I can't stand crossovers). But the more I see it, the more it looks like a Rogue and a Cube got locked in a room for 9 months and this is the result.

bodyblue says:

04:05 PM, 03/ 5/10

And a lot of folks said the Crosstour is ugly!

lowmilelude says:

04:43 PM, 03/ 5/10

Holy fncking ugly, batman! Given the commentary that the Terrain and Crosstour have generated, LTRTB should get one of these ASAP. Ugly cars are the only thing keeping the autoblogosphere alive these days!

shenanighans says:

06:05 PM, 03/ 5/10

I like it. Its about time we had a small car that didnt look like Corolla/Civic/Cobalt pieces of garbage.

Sign me up ill take two!

alman08 says:

Definitely. WHat an ugly, so FUGLY piece of............. nissan LOL
This car has to be the ugliest car I have ever seen.

zeniff says:

09:31 PM, 03/ 5/10

Trying to gauge what the target audience was. It must have been the 'Is it uglier than crap? I'll buy it!' category.

hugox1978 says:

Ugh, this is a real abomination, what is Nissan thinking with this thing?

mayoarceo says:

If there was a Nissan car I wanted from Europe it would be the Nissan Qasqai... http://www.topspeed.com/cars/nissan-qashqai/ke1889.html

fefan says:

07:14 AM, 03/ 6/10

Although not visually appealing to me, this is an interesting/unique vehicle. I'll be looking forward to the test write-ups.

kingisback350 says:

07:27 AM, 03/ 6/10

It looks wacky but cool. But come on guys what is it SUV, CUV, look how low is ground clearence is... I would rather by an all-wheel drive sedan and get the better gas mileage.

eltimbo says:

07:56 AM, 03/ 6/10

Hate to break it to you, mayoarceo, but your dream Qashqai is already over here. Change the front and rear styling and Hey Presto! It's the Rogue! The 2011 QQ redesign disguises it a bit, but if you look at the original Euro 2007 model, you'll see a Rogue. Apparently Nissan USA that Qashqai was a bit of an odd name for our market.

clarkma5 says:

12:16 PM, 03/ 6/10

I like this thing, but then again I like the Vehicross, which apparently means I'm crazy. But this beats the hell out of another beige Camry.

zoomzoomn says:

12:23 PM, 03/ 6/10

Come on! I mean, it's only a few lines away from being interesting looking...when you are good and lit, that is!

nolefan3 says:

04:47 PM, 03/ 6/10

Nissan spelled joke wrong.

In all seriousness though I think that some people will find it pleasing to look at. Most probably not... Depending on the drive train, feel and actual capacities it could sell enough to make a small profit, but could also turn into the next Aztek.

tehnighthawk says:

05:18 AM, 03/ 7/10

I like it. Much better than an aztec, whoever compared it to one should be shot.

redliner says:

07:35 AM, 03/ 7/10

How long before people start blacking out the top set of lights with lens-tint or spray?

konocar400h says:

12:15 PM, 03/ 7/10

@eltimbo-
I thought the exact same thing when I drove the Qashqui in Italy this winter (it was a diesel, pretty nice car). Then I came back and did a little research. Apparently the only thing that the Rogue shares is styling. Chassis, engine, suspension is all different. I thought it was really odd.

jscion says:

This is a fantastic looking small car. While the rest come out with femmy looking, no muscle utes, this is a breath of fresh air. Looks much better than alot of other small cars. Nissan is going to be the next cutting edge car manufacturer now that Toyota is having horrible quality problems and Honda has become boring.

firstwagon says:

"Nissan is going to be the next cutting edge car manufacturer now that Toyota is having horrible quality problems and Honda has become boring. "

When did Nissan's quality problems go away?

edcar2 says:

04:43 PM, 03/ 7/10

Wow. It's one thing to totally screw up the styling of a car to make it look dated, but this looks like Nissan's engineers didn't even try!

Cross a Leaf, Murano, and Versa, and THIS is what you got apparently...

drivera1981 says:

10:04 PM, 03/ 7/10

come on, really Nissan, i mean really, what are your designers smoking???

ewokssuck says:

02:04 AM, 03/ 8/10

This CUV would be okay if it was not for the four head lights. It would be like a woman having four breasts. You can have to much of a good thing.

mrnexus says:

04:56 AM, 03/ 8/10

i really like this car, I will buy one if it comes with Turbo

thebluecar says:

05:39 AM, 03/ 8/10

The bulky shape somehow reminds me of the Pontiac Aztec. also, the headlights rising above the top of the hood means they will be in your line of site at all times, and could add to eye strain during night driving (in addition to worsening your night vision).

I like the concept however.

lmbvette says:

beermagazine says:

The Aztek reference in many cars today show that while the Aztek was a failure it did have some good design elements that were never seen all the way through. Look at how many 2010 Azteks are coming out...BMW, Acura, Honda, Hyundia...

But the smaller car segment is always more interesting. The #1 selling car is boring...because most people are boring.

I won't pretend that I don't work for Nissan because I do, so naturally I'm a bit biased. However, I am a young female who is environmentally conscious, wants a car that's got some power but won't eat up gas and has AWD. I say BRAVO to Nissan for the Juke!! I'm not the biggest fan of the name but I think this car is going to do great, and as soon as it is available I will be buying one! I also think it's adorable! I'm sure there won't be too many "jock strap" dudes with thier tiny little T-shirts buying these but let's face it, real confident men and women will love this car. My husband used to drive a Mini, we loved the power and the fact that it was something different. But the maintenace on those German cars is just freaking rediculous, we got lucky to get out of it when we did, everything on it was breaking. It will be nice to have another car that's similarly funky and fast but that's as dependable as a Nissan. So to all you haters..watch Nissan and myself prove you wrong, when this car comes out, it will sell!
