Subaru Teases New WRX STI Headed for the New York Auto Show

subaru-teaser-1600.jpg
Well, now that the standard Impreza WRX looks like the STI, Subaru figured it was time to upgrade the actual STI with a new appearance. This teaser shot gives a not-so-subtle hint at what's in store. Look for the official unveil on Thursday morning.

i hope subaru has upgraded the engine also. various road tests showed that the current WRX is actually faster than a STI, for almost $10k less. the STI might be smarter and has more technology, but not everybody is willing to pay $10k for the extra goodies.

Is that really a sedan? I'll believe it when I see it.

I'd say its still a hatchback by the lip at the rear part of the hood I think they just put a rally wing on it, maybe a slightly more sedan profile but I'll bet $1.37 its still a Hatchback. But the best part is, it probably has a CVT with paddle shifters :P

Hard to believe it's a hatch; the spoiler doesn't even rise to the height of the roof.

Of course, it could be a sedan with the trunklid open. Probably not.

Or a radicallly different hatchback body style, but I seriously doubt that.

I am intrigued by the front fenders. Look nice.

I'm 99% certain this image is of a sedan, and not a hatch.

As an owner of an '05 STi, I can say that one of the things that I hope they do, is to stop fiddling around with the car so much. It's lost so much of its charm, and bullet-proof reliability. That being said, they also need to consider how to get more power out of the thing. With the new Camaro, and ESPECIALLY the new 5.0, that mid-$30k sports car segment doesn't just belong to the Evo & Impreza any longer. At least not here in the USA.

The big news is it's the sedan (unfortunately) with the type of wing everyone loves to hate. If they're also raising the price of the STi like the standard WRX there had better be something under the hood to show for it.

Thanks subaru123 for the link! Im an owner of an 04 Sti and has seen it's transformation through the years. I'm glad subaru continues to reinvent itself. I do agree with dougnash2009, there are many cars in the same price range that are offering similar bang for buck. Subaru needs to bring all it's model line over i.e. Spec-C and S202 and make them affordable. Along with great pricing on their base models. Let's face it, subaru is known for their reliability and with toyota having a 20% stake, everyone should be tripling their efforts to bring subaru to the top of the list.

subaru123, this image courtesy of someone on IWSTI.com might be a better indication of what a STI sedan may look like.

Hmmm... very interesting. Lookin' forward to some more pics.

Does this mean the current STI five-door, i.e. wagon will now be discontinued, or maybe BOTH STI models will now be offered,`a la WRX? That's the real question!

Sedan body styles actually provide a slightly more rigid platform overall, and maybe ever so slightly less weight, in the new STI's case.

@subaru123: It kinda looks like a farm implement from the rear. Glad I can't afford it.

subytrojan says:

charlesncharge, I'm guessing Subaru will have both a hatch and sedan STI on the market for MY2011.

subytrojan says:

I prefer the hatch so much more!!!

chirsch3 says:

looks a little cramped in the middle to be a sedan
looks like a coupe to me that would definitely make it different from the WRX
just saying

It will probably pretty much look 100% exactly like this only with a big wing on the back. Personally, I like the hatch better with the exception of the fugly tail lights. If I were in the market for an STI, I would probably choose the sedan version just to get away from those tail lights...

flipxcru says:

I'm probably one of the few, but I'd like to hope they keep a hatch along with the sedan version of the MY2011

pll_sub says:

Please don't go back to only offering a saloon, at the risk of seriously annoying people I personally think that anything pre 2008 looks like a 1970's euro 3 box that has been driven through a shop selling body kits.

But beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. STIs with huge wings scream "CHECK MY CAR I'M PROBABLY SPEEDING" the hatch enables high speed progress without standing out and provides the abilty to hold lots of kit.

escalade2346 says:

it is definitely a sedan why would they add the wrx sedan with same body kit as the sti now its easier for them to do change it the sti take suspension and engine out of the wrx sedan and add a sti engine and suspension and there u have a sti sedan
