Stirling Moss Recovering After Falling Down An Elevator Shaft

Stirling Moss is recovering in a London hospital after falling three floors down an elevator shaft breaking both of his ankles and suffering damage to some vertebrae.

The 80-year-old ex-Formula One driver, pictured here with the not-entirely-attractive Mercedes-Benz SLR named after him, spent the weekend in intensive care but has no internal injuries after the fall caused by a freak elevator malfunction.

Generally considered the finest driver to never win the Formula One crown (he lost it by one point to Mike Hawthorn in 1958), one of Moss' finest moments was at the wheel of the original Mercedes SLR during 1955 Mille Miglia. He and co-driver Denis Jenkinson rocketed over the Italian road course at an average of just under 100 mph, beating teammate Juan Manuel Fangio in the process.

Reportedly, Moss' wife Susie says he is already complaining about the size and quality of the hospital breakfast. Sounds promising.

80 years old, fell three stories onto a presumably hard surface, and simply breaking his ankles and some back damage? God certainly did gift certain individuals with extra ruggedness.
