What you don't hear is the sound of the crunch of the 1st to 2nd shift when you tear out the syncros, like I did when I ran an autocross in my Fiat X1/9.
It actually sounds a lot like my old Suzuki 185 when the expansion chamber gasket failed at the exhaust port.

I think racing engines with no muffler sound all pretty good. The Stratos is awesome but even the S2000 sounds pretty sick too:
