That's right, this wagon isn't headed our way, and you have nobody to blame but yourselves.
Sure, internet forums are awash in glorification of the German sport wagon, but only 800 or so Americans bothered to actually purchase one. And that my friends makes for a very difficult to explain business plan.

Selfishly... I'm feeling even better about the A6 Avant we have on order.
I understand BMW's business decision but it's a shame that a reasonable, attractive vehicle like this can't get the green light and an ugly, heavy, idiotic POS like the 550GT can.

@cjasis,
I was not at all happy when Audi stopped selling the allroad quattro in the US once they started selling the gluttonous Q7... and now BMW is making the same move with the 5-series estate and the 5-series GT.
I know, I know... Americans love huge vehicles because of the perception of utility and sportiness, which I think is pretty silly. An allroad quattro with the 4.2L V8 can outdo the Q7 in almost everything but the number of occupants.
The lack of an S4 avant for the US market is also another example and a rant for another day.
At the end of the day, estates have a bad stigma here so we end up with bloated, estate-like vehicles such as the 5 GT, X6, Venza, Crosstour, Pacifica, Edge, Taurus X, ZDX...

If we got it, we wouldn't buy it. There just isn't a market for a premium wagon in the US. I totally agree that this car should sell very well, but the stupid bias against wagons that so many people have (I'm looking at you wealthy Mom driving the X5 to pick the kids up from school when the 5 wagon is far more practical) will prevent the few that want one from getting it.
For those IL readers that bemoan it's loss, if you could afford one (and I cannot) then get your behind over to Caddy and at least drive the CTS wagon. Otherwise no complaining from you.

That is one sexy wagon! Especially comparing it with the older 5 series wagon.
And when you compare it to the competition.....mmmm I have the same thought:

The side profile is amazingly great, and the E class wagon is so hideous.
Comparing engines power and fuel efficiency, u end up with the BMW as well...

Once again, the estate version of the 5 series is the best looking to my eyes. This is true for the Audi and Merc competition as well. Having said that, I've advised my sister who is in the market to get an X5 diesel. The higher ground clearance of the SAV actually has an advantage in heavy snow conditions and of course, the diesel gives it better fuel economy than any gas mid-size estate in America.

Sad that wagons have to be "up high" for Americans to want one anymore.

Are more than 800 people going to buy the GT? Really?

I've actually seen a few 5GTs on the road already, so I think 800 is doable. They aren't as bad looking as I expected, but I still don't know why anyone would buy one.

I want one, BAD.
To all BMW dealers, convince BMWNA to bring this in and I will get one. Mark my words.

I hope the good folks in Germany change their minds, it is a beautiful vehicle and their wagons are great to drive. Over the years I have owned both an Audi wagon and the Allroad, a MB E320 4 matic and 2 BMW wagons. I think without doubt the BMW 's are the best. We still have our 93 525IT, it is a tank, still drives great with minimal repairs. We also have a 530XIT wagon and it is more fun than any Q7, X5, X3 or ML. Our 530 wagon handled the crazy winter we had this year in DC just fine. BTW, I have seen and test driven the GT and while it is not quite as ugly as the X6 (though it is close), I would never buy one. It is not a wagon.

Definitely better looking then the outgoing 5 wagon. I think BMW should offer it to the US as a special order as MB does for it's E63 wagon.
