Audi Pimped the RS5 Just a Little Too Much

audi-rs5-show-f34-1600.jpg

Oh, don't worry, Audi didn't give it six tailpipes or something quite that catastrophic. No, this is a mistake that might be considered minor, but it's worrisome nonetheless.

Look past the monstrous Audi executive and you'll notice that this Audi RS5 is wearing a set of chrome wheels. OK, maybe they're hyper-polished aluminum, but they look as chrome as a set of Cragar SSs.

What's next? A gold package?

I don't like chrome wheels either, and I'm not a big fan of the aluminum pieces adorning the bottom of the bumpers. I felt the A5's design elegance came from it's simplicity, this is just gilding the lily.

As a side note, why hasn't he memorized that script, it looks like he could care less about the car. I would have memorized every spec.

@ carguy622,

clearly you are not as busy or important as him. ;) j/k.

+1 on the chrome flippers. that's what they look like, big, fat shiny flippers, esp on the first pic.

I miss those gold packages. picks out the poseurs. ;)

The wheels look good, the car, not so much...it has front wheel drive written all over it.

Audi has always utilized chrome more than BMW or Mercedes, but those wheels make the car look like it belongs in a rap video.

The chrome wheels are terrible!!!

Also, is it "RS 5" or "RS5?" To space or not to space. That is the question.

the A8 they showed earlier already had chrome wheels. This isnt news. I love it when Euro car fanboys like Hellwig get all bent out of shape over chrome. This is America, chrome has been on cars for decades and its not going away. Like it or not design trends are shared amongst the world's automakers. If you go back 20 years or so the idea of brightwork on imports was hard to conceive and yet today you find chrome trim, chrome accented grilles and even chrome wheels on everything from LExus to Audi. I know it pains folks to think that ANY design or any other auto business trend could start in the US but it happens. Lets not forget up until 10-15 years ago European automakers swore that they werent going to worry about cupholders and interior storage space and other conveniences that they felt were only appropriate for dumb American drivers. They lost that battle because ultimately the US is too big of a market for them to ignore what Americans like.

Subytrojan, I have a feeling it's RS5, just like it's S5 and not S 5.

Cripes, it's a *show car*. They are allowed to have flair on the auto show debuts. If buyers want to spend an extra five grand to add them to their production car, let 'em.

I don't mind chrome... however, this one looks ugly... different spokes maybe, I guess for the car to be worth the 100+k you need a good slathering of chrome and carbon fiber.

I guess I'm the oddball here (what else is new) but I like chrome or polished rims.

The U.S. NEEDS a RS4 SEDAN. Not a under-performing COUPE!

Anyone in the market for a 2+2 sports car with AWD is going to go with a GTR.
The RS5 should have added forced induction on TOP of the 4.2 v8.
300lbs of torque in a 4,000lb sports car in 2010= FAIL.

ONLY because I need four doors and AWD, I can unhappily accept a RS4 with the pathetic a naturally aspirated 4.2 v8 .
If the RS4 doen't return to the U.S., I'll just pick up a Panamera or tune a 335xi.

Audi RS5= Fail
They better price this brick right.

Finally....
Chrome wheels? The auto world has been waiting for nxte generation RS4/RS5 news for YEARS and you blog about CHROME WHEELS on the model unveiled? You call yourselves "auto journalists"? Kill yourselves. Seriously.

I dont mind the chrome wheels. I prefer silver or gunmetal but as long as they dont overuse it, its not going to kill the looks. Meaning, leave it out of the interior completely.

Waitasec, Ed Hellwig's a "Euro car fanboy"?

I'll remind myself of that each time I walk past his Ford pickup and Chevelle in our parking garage.

Thanks for the tip, 1487!

Ya know Mercedes used tail fins on its 220 in the 60's. Just sayin......

rlyon says:

I posted this a few days the ago, the chrome wheels is a fail. Audi doesn't offer ANY chrome wheels, so why bling out the hottest car in it's class and distract from an otherwise clear winner?

campi3ell says:

Given how polished and shiny the rest of the car looked, the chromed wheels fit in. It's expected for show-cars. I prefer the brushed aluminum look for wheels, but that's just me.

Oh, and side-note...only 317 lb/ft of torque? Maybe it's time to massage the motor a bit more and enlarge it some to extract just a bit more out of it, Mercedes knows a thing or two about torque...
