As you may have seen in our tC intro video, this new Scion was sporting some new lines when it drove onto the stage here in New York. Sure, they kind of look like sharper versions of the old lines, but new is new.
According to Scion, this tC rides on an all-new platform as well. We'll have to take its word on that one for now, as the car's wheelbase and suspension are essentially unchanged. There is a new 2.5-liter 180-horsepower four-cylinder engine, however, and this tC offers a choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmissions, which is new. There's an electric power steering unit now and standard 18-inch wheels. Not a bad set of upgrades.

The roof is too boxy, but the overall look is nicely upscale for young drivers.

Toyota apparently spent all their money for this project on the powertrain. They barely changed the design and made the interior their latest plastic nightmare.

C-pillar and rear end = fail

Something looks wrong with the shape, but I just can't pinpoint it. Kinda looks like the Focus coupe from the side. Anyways, it looks like the interior was downgraded. Reminds me of cars from the early 90s. And lol at the flat-bottom steering wheel...really? I love the current Scion tC, but this thing seems to be a regression aesthetically.

Looks okay... the Civic just looks cooler. I'd say, that's a fail.

Doesn't look very sporty and isn't that the reason for a coupe?
sabastian says:

Goodness, that interior is awful. I'm really having a tough time trying to think of a car in the class that is worse in that area. Suggestions?

Bigger and more powerful! That's the Scion way!!!
What's the purpose of this brand again?

Well..I'm happy that the Scion line-up is still in existence and that they've even added more engine power. BUT, the side rear windows look horrendous. The dashboard looks tacky. Overall, the design doesn't do an otherwise cool car justice.

what the heck is this? so glad toyota still has the FT-86 coming. by the way, what's up with that dashboard? is toyota really trying to design a cheapie just to see if they can still out-sell the competitors with it?

My 05 Scion tC has a much higher quality looking interior, and I definitely don't like that boxy roof with the c-pillar/back end combo. The original tC's good looks came from its lack of angles - it was rounded everywhere, sort of the opposite of the xB. Now the xB has lost its angles and gave it to the tC. I'm definitely not happy with this new tC. I won't be replacing my current one with another.

The rear look like the back of the original Aveo. The steering wheel looks like it came from a Power Wheels car.

I notice they didnt mention mileage which means its not going to be great. They have it a big four cylinder instead of someting small and powerful with a turbo. It will probably get no more than 32mpg hwy which is not impressive for a compact coupe. The interior is typical Toyota cheapness. Nothing but hard plastic everywhere. Doesn't seem like nav is being offered either.

Thanks for the photos, but if you don't show a real picture of the front end, it is like taking a photo of a person without showing their face.
Having said that, this Scion will be initially a good seller because the old one is so long in the tooth. But, over the long haul, I don't think the style will hold up. It just isn't sporty looking-- the same problem Honda had with the Del Sol. The Scion is just too "xB-ish"
smudge12 said it resembled a Focus coupe. In any case, the Scion will probably be priced very close to a loaded Focus--if Toyota holds the price close to the current tC. For the same money-- or a little more-- I would take the Scion.

99% of customers will think this is a refresh. It looks too much like the old car and the interior isnt a step up at all. Toyota doesnt seem to believe in actually upgrading interiors with a new generation of a model. This interior is just as basic looking as the 2004 model.

Yikes....just as boooooooring as the old one. I'd rather have a Kia Koup.

I would love to the find the person at Mercedes (I think they were first) who designed the notched groove for auto gearboxes and slap them around.
I can't stand the one in my Forester. Just make it a straight line with a manumatic section off to the side ala the Tiptronic and many others.

I kinda like the new roof and c-pillar, but only a little bit. It seems more Scion-ish than the bland, generic round coupe shape of the old model. The rest of the design is lacking, and that interior is downright horrendous. Seeing as fuel economy was not mentioned, I can't imagine it will be much better than the current model's mediocre numbers. It really does seem like Toyota is seeing how awful a car they can build that mindless American consumers will flock to just because it comes from Toyota.

It looks very dated and un-sporty.
fortstring says:
02:16 PM, 04/ 1/10
Hey, it looks better than the old one, which was even more dated. I see some FT-86 design language at least in the front portion of the roof, where the blacked out pillars give a pseudo-wraparound look. I still think they ought to put an even stronger engine in that car, and make the suspension/handling better.
lucien4 says:
03:10 PM, 04/ 1/10
It just doesn't look like a $18K car... And I also say outdated and non-sporty.
FT-AE86 looks little bit better but still nothing like the Celica/Supra's.
To get a sporty looking car I guess Toyota wants you to spend $400K on LF-A...
aznraptor says:
04:06 PM, 04/ 1/10
the side is too flat I think, nothing that catches your eye
I think the interior would be better black, at least it wouldn't look so cheap
overall...meh, I think my RSX looks better STILL :P

that flat-top roof has to go. otherwise it's a nice, subtle change to the tc. definately a good transition, as opposed to some manufacturers that jump from box-like to futuristic sphere.
chisportsfan89 says:
12:07 AM, 04/ 7/10
Ok, so I think a lot of people believe me that Scion seemed to downgrade the interior on the new tc. Since I'm from Chicago, I can't see the new tc up close until it comes out in the fall. However, did people notice that they got rid of the auto up/down window on the passenger side. It seems that it is only on the drivers side from what I can see from the pic. Also, maybe someone could tell me if the new TC now is using that cheap hard plastic surface rather than the material in the current tc which made it so popular. Also, I don't think there is a temperature gauge on it either. I mean don't get me wrong it is a nice looking car. However, that irks me when they make cut pennies and make the interior cheaper.

The exterior modifications are interesting; it wasn't instant love for me but I like them. The hardware enhancements are excellent. The steering wheel is cool. However, the interior design and materials used are absolutely horrendous. The savings in dollars in exchange for a truly horrific dash/console/hvac is a great disappointment. I really wish they would change this BEFORE the release to market so that I can buy it in an instant. Scion/Toyota - please rethink this 2011 interior and thus, give the market what it wants!
