Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood says owners of Toyotas affected by the recent recalls shouold stop driving their cars until they are repaired by Toyota dealers.
According to a report by the AP, LaHood made the remarks during testimony to a House Appropriations subcommittee on transportation. LaHood says his advice to owners is to "stop driving it. Take it to a Toyota dealer because they believe they have a fix for it."
UPDATE: LaHood now says he didn't mean to say stop driving Toyotas.

That should be easy enough. All 5 million plus people who are affected should walk to work. Riiiiight.

If Toyota's shim is really a fix for the problem, the interim solution is easy. Don't floor the gas pedal! Your car accelerates just fine with the pedal pushed half way down. If you don't floor it, it wont' stick.
Why in the world aren't they pushing this advice onto their customers? Am I missing something???

People are not going to forget this. People buy Toyotas because they are reliable and dependent. If people become inconvenienced (assuming they follow the secretary's advice), they will not forget and will not turn to Toyota when they want a new car. Reputations are very fragile.
Now I need to explain to the wife that she can still drive her car home...

+1 brn. personally, i can't think of an instance in my daily 24 mile commute that i would need to peg the throttle to get to work 30 seconds earlier. most people don't remember or know how to drive safely and prudently. they just want to get up to speed as fast as possible so they can stop by mcdonalds for a burger and coffee.

This could actually be awesome. Imagine a world without Toyota Camry and Corolla drivers on the road. That demographic (old people and Asian women) are the single greatest cause of road rage.

@benson
That would also be a world without foreign competition, and we are all stuck driving 80's GM junk.
If you like GM's current offering, you can thank Toyota and Honda for that.

From MSNBC:
"WASHINGTON - Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood told owners of recalled Toyotas to "stop driving" their vehicles, but later said he misspoke and advised owners to bring their vehicles to dealers if they were concerned."
So should I call a tow truck and take it to a dealership, or should I just make an appointment and drive there?
Or should I just ignore these clowns and call the dealership in due time?

"Don't floor the gas pedal! "
How often do Corolla or Camry drivers floor it?

As often as anyone else. I know many people that believe the throttle is a digital device. When they want to accelerate (especially onto the freeway), they floor it.

None that I can think of. Watch the tach while driving with most drivers. It always amuses me how many people can drive all day and never go over 3000 rpm (or 2000 rpm on an American car).
I follow people onto the freeway everyday and I can guarentee you they are NOT flooring it.... and camry and corolla drivers are the worst.

Freeway? Firstwagon you must live in Cali. We call it a Turnpike/Thruway out here. I would agree with what your saying from my experiences from out here in the Northeast as well. Toyota drivers aren't the fastest ones out there typically because a good majority of people who own them are older and drive less aggressively.

minibro77, I'll take the blame for using the term "freeway" before FW and I'll continue to use it. I also believe firstwagon is from the other CA (Canada).
FW, we have different observations in that respect. It doesn't matter much, as relative to the number of vehicles out there, the instances of stuck accelerators very low. Maybe because all those people you observe aren't flooring it?

What kind of pressure did Toyota give LaHood to make him declare a "misstatement"?

I think you're all missing the point...take advantage of these instances and buy Toyota's stock. In the long run, it'll be a great investment. It's probably a great opportunity to pick up a stock that is artifically cheap right now thanks to some loose lips in the administration.
I have driven Toyota's / Lexus my entire life and know that they are better quality than the local options. The problem is that most of the Toyota owners are not aware enough to actually appreciate what they have. Maybe they have to trade it in on a local brand, watch their value plummet, be in for real repairs, and then they'll realize what they had.
Sometimes you don't know what you have until it's gone I suppose.
Anyway, stop complaining about idiot politicians and find the silver lining...invest in TM stock now and help Toyota and yourself. It's exactly what they don't want you to do. :)

brn is correct, I am from the Great White North (and old enough to know what that means ). Here we don't really have a name for them, we just borrow terms from wherever. Freeway is common or just hwy.
The TransCanada is a famous one but no one call hwys Turnpikes or Thruways here.
