NHTSA Investigating Prius for Brake Problems

10-toyota-prius-lead-blog.jpg
NHTSA is turning the screws on Toyota just a little bit more today with the announcement that it will begin investigating complaints of brake problems with the latest Prius.

Complaints were reported in both the U.S. and Japan and most of them focus on momentary loss of brake power while driving over a bump or through a pothole. Toyota has acknowledged the problem and says it's an issue related to the switchover from the electric to the hydraulic brake systems.

Interesting. Jim Lentz, President of Toyota USA in his open letter ended with:
"Ensuring your safety is our highest priority. We’ll continue to do everything we can to meet – and exceed – your
expectations, and justify your continued trust in Toyota."

And yet Toyota has not done anything proactive to take care of the Prius brake issues - an issue which they acknowledge as they have re-programmed some cars, but apparently only care about the unsold ones.

So. Lentz's and Toyota's statement does not seem, how shall we say it, sincere...

What's with the sudden flury of invetigations from NHTSA? Were they caught napping by some elected official? I would expect a steady trickle of investigations over a sudden rampage.

"What's with the sudden flury of invetigations from NHTSA?"

I doubt there's been any change. It's more likely that the Toyota recall issues are causing the media to publicize a flurry of "investigations".
