The News-Press of Fort Myers, Florida reports that Sanibel Shell Service Station owner Kenneth Kasten was out test-driving a customer's 2008 Porsche Boxster that was in for routine service.
So there he is allegedly test driving the thing at about 6 am doing about, oh, 163 mph when he and the car fell off the road and into the mangroves, comprehensively re-arranging the Porsche's parts.
Kasten allegedly decided that right about then was a good time to get the hell out of there and was found hours later "hiding in a parking lot." One might think mangroves would be a better placed to hide but that's not important right now.
The police officer on the case said: "I told him how fast we determined he was going, and he said that was about right." Nice to see a man standing up accepting responsibility for his alleged misdeeds, at least after, you know, leaving the scene of an accident and hiding in a parking lot until he was found.
We think he might have been inspired by the video below.

He who takes an 08 Porsche Boxster to a gas station shop for service, deserves to lose his car.

And here I thought it was the "Straightline's editor Mechanic," and not just a "regular mechanic" who did the deed...

Yeah, that doesn't look like the best place to service a Porsche (Google StreetView):

I've read that the Veyron driver claimed a bird flew at his windshield or something, and that's what caused the wreck, but I always thought he was just covering for some stupid shenanigans, but that sure looked to me that he just drove into the water for no apparent reason. Narcolepsy maybe?

For crashing at 163 mpg, that Boxster is surprisingly intact. I saw a pic of a (then-new) 335i coupe that lost control at 150 mph, and it peppered the local highway with all of it's internals. The driver and passengers didn't survive, but this dolt not only lived, but RAN to the dealership where nobody noticed the state of his clothes, etc?
Wow.

the gas station probably offered to do it for like 20 bucks less. That is what happens if you buy a car you really can't afford.

Agreed with notabigdeal. I imagine the owner was one of those 20-somethings in an hourly job that buys the car for the status and image he doesn't even have in the first place.

The owner is the idiot here. Yeah, I'm taking my Porsche to the "Shell station" to get it serviced. Really?
