2012 Buick Regal GS May Not Get All-Wheel Drive

buickgs-stock-1600.jpg
The all but confirmed 2012 Buck Regal GS may not get all-wheel drive like the concept shown at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show.

Bob Lutz, GM's Vice Chairman, told Inside Line that there have been numerous internal discussions about the direction of the proposed vehicle. He said that the product planners are debating whether all-wheel drive is worth the added weight and cost.

Lutz didn't confirm any details on the engine destined for the GS, but he did note that they were less than overwhelmed by the performance of the Opel's turbo V6. With that in mind, don't be surprised if the Buick GS arrives with a turbocharged four-cylinder tweaked beyond the 220-horses generated by the standard turbo four.

I thought the GS AWD would kick ass. Finally an interesting GM product--but with FWD... sheesh, boring. I'll stick with 3-series and C-class.

Physics lesson Bob - asking the front wheels to entirely handle all the major power the engine is spitting out and do the steering while the rear wheels just keep the gas tank from dragging on the ground makes little sense. The only way this will work is if the engine has only mild output, and then we have bigger issues. This car should have an engine that demands AWD. I drove the 300 hp FWD Impala SS and that combination just doesn't work.

That's just great, just when I had finally gotten past the Buick-Saturn-Opel nameplate and added this car to my cross-shopping list, GM comes ready to ruin a great car: first, the wimpy 4, now no AWD. What next? No manual? Door cladding a la Grand Am?

well the concept car had a 2L with 255hp so it would make sense to think the production car would have such an engine. They should offer the car with FWD and AWD. While the AWD model would be impressive if it costs $35k or more (very likely) sales wouldn't be all that high. Plenty of people support these kinds of cars via internet comments but few would plunk down $35k-$40k for a 3900lb AWD Buick.

As someone who drives a 2.0 DI turbo regularly I can tell you that engine is strong and loves to rev. It also is surprisingly smooth (balance shafts?) and frugal. My HHR SS is about as aerodynamic as a brick but at a steady 65 I am getting 34 mpg. I think a 260 hp turbo with AWD would make for an entertaining car.

based on the performance figures I've seen for the A4 and A5 with the 2L I would say 255hp is more than enough power to make the GS entertaining.

Hmmmm, this doesn't sound too good. I guess I'll think about getting a lightly used G37 or a Legacy GT.

@qv356mt, I wholeheartedly agree with a lightly-used G, but I think this car does sound good as an entertaining luxury sedan. Good as the Acura TL. Plus it arguably looks better. Yes, I'm disappointed in no AWD, but Buick may not be be ready to challenge the sport marquees just yet.

No AWD = no interest from me. :(

I work for GM and I am livid that they are considering dropping AWD from the GS. I was very excited about the combination of a high output, turbo-charged, 4-cylinder combined with a manual 6-speed transmission and AWD. I would like to say for the record that this is a HUGE mistake and exactly what I would expect from the "Old GM". I'm a 35 year old and car/driving enthusiast but am RARELY inspired by GM vehicles. I WILL plunk down $35K for the right car. They almost had me with the GS. If GM is not going to make this car AWD, please tell me right now so that I can start saving up for my next Subaru.

is the AWD cancellation confirmed? Doesnt seem like it so why so much reaction. Lutz just said they are evaluating the options. Its kind of early to denounce a model that hasnt even been officially confirmed.

I'm stunned! I thought this was just a rumor on gminsidenews.com but now I'm really starting to believe that GM is actually considering doing this. I was seriously considering buying this car when it came out. I will say this to GM with 100% certainty (if they even care what I have to say in the first place). I WILL NOT buy this car unless it has all wheel drive. No AWD...NO SALE! Ford has AWD midsize and large cars so I'll just go there then. I can't believe that there are morons in GM who actually think that putting 295 ft/lbs of torque through ONLY the front wheels is a good idea. Are you freakin' kidding me! Their engineers did take physics classes in school did'nt they? One of the MAIN things that Buick was bragging about when this "concept car" came out was it's AWD system and how it made the car feel like a rear wheel drive car with it's ability to take torque, put, I think, up to 80% of it in the rear wheels and then, with it's elec. lim. slip rear diff., split the torque left and right. THIS IS AWESOME!!! I realize Buick was competing with the Acura TSX with this car, but I don't think GM realizes that it's main competition was Audi. This car was an affordable Audi A4 S-Line for the masses.

GM......please, please, please, please, please, please at least, at absolute least make AWD an option for this car if you really find it necessay to make it FWD. To me, keeping the AWD is worth the extra 200 lbs and $1500-$2000.

Let me start by saying I was a American car buyer for years when I was younger. GM & Chrysler during the muscle car days. I will always love auto's with power & great handling capabilities. More recently (last ten years) I have drifted to mostly European made. This is a list of my most recent rides to present day. 2002 BMW 530I, 2002 Porsche Boxter, 2005 Audi A4, 2005 Cadillac CTS-V, 2006 Porsche Boxter S, 2007 BMW M6, 2010 Jaguar XKR. I provide this list to make you aware that the first reports of the Regal GS with AWD was enough to grab my attention to a GM vehicle (American made or not). Even though the engine rating of 255HP was low end I would deal with it. I would probably wait for the first release and see if a upgrade to the engine was later offered. BUT please listen to me and others (john1168). This car MUST come with a AWD option. FWD does not make it in this type of aggressive vehicle you are about to offer.

Please listen.
