2011 Mazda 2 Shows Off Its Insides

mazda2-int-2-1600.jpg
You may remember the 2011 Mazda 2 shown at the 2009 L.A. Auto Show. It was small, interesting looking and very, very green, at least on the outside. At the time, the interior details weren't quite finished, so there were no cabin photos allowed.

Well, Mazda got around to finishing up the interior design work in its new micro-back and  decided to show it off at the Toronto auto show. So what do you think? Better or worse than a Honda Fit?

Just to refresh everyones memory as to what the Fit's dash look s like:

http://blogs.insideline.com/roadtests/2009/02/2009-honda-fit-buy-the-nav-if-only-for-one-reason.html

I prefer the Fit's gauges (I prefer analog dials). The Mazda seems to have a better wheel. I don't care for the center stack in either car.

Overall, the Fit because the gauges are more important to me than the center stack.

After inserting the link and saving the comment, I see that Ed included it in the post. Whoops.

I think the Fiesta looks better than both. Really dissapointed by mazda with this one considering how much the mazda to and the Fiesta have in common

The Fit's utilitarian interior is better. Those back seats in the Mazda2 don't fold down flat.

The Fit's center stack and confused dash shapes is hideous, so Mazda wins by being cleaner.

I would say the Fit looks better. It looks like there are poor quality materials and it doesnt scream "fun" to me.

Gotta go with the Fit, for the interior

For the most part I like the Fit, but the interior is a bit cheap and kooky. The knobs look like they were made for a four year old. The Mazda 2 is better, but the Fiesta is the best. That is just concerning the dash area though. The Fit still wins on cargo utility hands down.

I'd have to drive it. The Fit looks odd in pictures but seems fine while you're driving it.

I'm looking forwarding to driving the Fiesta and the Mazda2 (hopefully back to back).

A Fit "screams" fun??? I think the Fiesta will become the best selling car in the segment...I cant wait to test drive one.

I think that it is a clean design and true to Mazda's current interior themes. That said, it might be a bit too neat and tidy. It needs a splash of brightwork to bring it home. Something extending from either side of the radio's mid section would work well at minimal cost. Manufacturers have got to remember that it does matter how the interior looks...even on a cheap car.

This does not look very competitive with the Fiesta. I hope they are going to price the 2 cheaper if they are not going to meet the interior quality of the Fiesta.

I think that the rear seat with its multiple folding options is one of the Fit's best features and one that every manufacturer should apologetically copy. It's incredibly useful. I find it interesting that with all of the praise the Fit gets at IL, the rear seat is rarely mentioned.

The Mazda interior may be a little bland, but at least it looks like it wasn't designed by a twelve year old like the Fit's appears to be. But of course the Fiesta will be the best selling car in this segment. Honda is still limiting the number of fits it produces, and most people will not consider the Mazda because it is a Mazda. The other cars in this segment (Aveo, SX4, etc) are cheaply produced crap and people who test drive them can tell that.

The fit has better HVAC controls and cup holders (since insideline raves about them on the long term blog) but overall i think the mazda is a bit nice looking.

They had both the Fiesta and the Mazda2 at the Harrisburg Auto Show this year, so I checked out both of them. Hands down, the Fiesta is the winner over the 2 and the Fit... if you're judging strictly by aesthetics. I'm a fan of the Fit's styling, but I admit that the interior layout is a bit quirky and doesn't have the highest quality materials. Was thoroughly impressed by the Fiesta inside. On the other hand, the Mazda2 looked extraordinarily plebian and mundane. My biggest gripe about the 2 was that the interior materials were dull and had a lackluster quality to them. The black panels actually looked gray to me... even though I knew they were black. This isn't something the above photo necessarily conveys, so it's important to see it in person.

Ford was downright premium compared to the other two. I can't say that enough.

My biggest concern with the Fiesta is price and how it's packaged. The base price is terrific $12,999 (CDN) but to get the hatchback version you need to take a lot of extra stuff and the price jumps the $16,799. That's $1800 more then a Fit DX, a lot in this market.

If the Mazda doesn't make you get the loaded version in order to get the hatch then they maybe the real big winner here.

"and most people will not consider the Mazda because it is a Mazda." For everyone I know it's the other way round. People will buy it because it's a Mazda whereas they might pass on the Fiesta because it's a Ford. The Mazda3 outsells the Focus by a wide margin in Canada.
