Of all the cars at the 2010 Tokyo Auto Salon (Japan's equivalent of the SEMA show), the Toyota FT-86 G Sports is surely getting the most attention. It's just another FT-86 concept, but this time it's turbocharged. Plus, it just looks cool with its white paint, carbon fiber hood and red detailing.
This won't be the last you see of the FT-86 G Sports, either, as Toyota has a co-branding arrangement with Sony, which conveniently released a trailer of the car in Gran Turismo 5 last night. We know you're sick of hearing about terminally delayed GT5, but you're going to want to watch the animated FT-86 sliding around the track nonetheless. That video is after the jump, along with more photos.
Specifications on the Toyota FT-86 G Sports are vague, but the show cars isn't a real car in the driving sense anyway. Here's what we know: It has a turbocharged version of the 2.0-liter boxer-4 engine and a six-speed manual gearbox driving the rear wheels.
We don't know the specification on the turbocharger (nor the intercooler visible through the front fascia), but it should give the little car a shot at getting out of the hole with its enormous tires -- Bridgestone Potenza RE050s, size 245/40R19 in front and 275/35R19 in back.
And if you could see into the cockpit, you'd spot Recaro seats for the driver and front passenger.

This is great news. I cant wait for a production version to finally show itself. But this could be a good thing that Toyota let a tuning company get its hands on this. It could mean that the production body style is all done! Lets go Toyota dont drop the ball now.

The so-called "Toyobaru" looks good as a boy racer but with those dark tented windows it looks a bit like a giant hot wheels toy. So glad that Akio Toyoda is now running things for Toyota. This is my type of geneses because right now Toyota needs a rebirth almost as bad as Hyundai once did. Not sure why every other Toyota has headlights that pop out like a slug, also refreshing that they didn’t do that to this car.

I'm really excited about this car. As long as there's no Toyota-like steering involved....

The subtle wide body kit looks great. I hope they could incorporate this, minus the wings, decals etc. I really hope they don;t wimp out on the power. Give it a version with 300+ hp to go up againts the G37 and Genesis coupe. This looks much better than either of them, although it is a bit of a GTR ripoff from some angles. I still like it though.

I see a perfect opportunity to put something like this into production, give it AWD which Subaru should have no problem with and market it as a poor man's GTR sold in the mid 30s.

looks nice BUT... The new Mustang and Camaro are faster and cheeper. THIS REMINDS ME OF THE BAD DAYS WHEN CIVIC DRIVERS THOUGHT THEY COULD TAKE ON CORVETTES.

Styling reeks of some-young-Japanese-guy's testosterone. It appears that what we have here is a stock Celica ricer. I do like the carbon fiber hood tho.

its a good looking car hope they don't kill it off like the Celica and MR2 and yes it does have the GTR side profile going on.

What a complete waste of metal and plastic. Why can't Toyota build good looking cars like the Mark IV Toyota Supra anymore? Toyota's design direction in the early 90s was so much stronger than the plain-jane vanilla mediocrity they're putting on the road today. While this is not plain-jane vanilla, it's certainly not pretty either. In fact, I find this quite repulsive.
This THING; it looks like someone bred a Chevy Camaro with a Nissan 350Z and tossed it around in a dryer for 10 minutes. Then, it got sent to the closet and had a few intimate experiences with the front end of a Nissan GTR.
What do we end up with in the end? Just a bunch of tacky plastic tacked onto a body shell. What a hunk of junk. What a waste of time and money.

@flwind
I think they can't give the FT-86 the AWD system of Subaru.
The boxer engine appears to have been moved back between the wheels (instead of hanging ahead of the front axle line)... no space for the front differential?

Wannabe Nissan. Why doesn't Toyota just make a new Celica? What the hell is wrong with them. I hated it personally since I'm a Nissan guy, but it makes so much sense when I hear people yearning for a modern Celica.

@icecubefosho
The FT-86 is roughly the same size as the original 1st gen 70's Celica and the 80's AE86 Sprinter Trueno.

Frankly, I'm tired of all the recent comments about how a car has features of another car. Yes, good car designs get reused and mimicked. There are very few fresh ideas out there. Remember the Aztec, that was unique...
I'm more excited about this car than any other in a long time. The wonderful Subie power plant in a rear drive vehicle that's affordable is a recipe for success. I love the revised front end on this versus the first concept. The headlight detail and hood are beautiful features, and I hope they make it to production. I'm not too keen on the tail side vents, and the spoiler could be a bit more subdued. Big thumbs up in my book though!! Way to go Toyobaru.

Hopefully the production version will look less ricey. I would've liked it if they put in a v6 instead.

It's not often that a SEMA car looks better and cleaner than its OEM counterpart, but that new nose makes all the difference.
