Spy Photos: 2011 Porsche 911 Caught in the Snow

It's winter testing time and the 2011 Porsche 911 hasn't taken any time off lately. Our shooters caught this prototype cruising through some heavy snow still wearing much of its typical camouflage.

The only changes we can see on this test mule compared to previous prototypes are a few tweaks to the front air inlets and foglights. The pseudo-whale tail rear end continues to hide the styling changes in back, although you can see the bright LED taillights shining through.

Great engine but I think Porsche should maybe hire an Italian or French firm to design the car body. The 911 was cool... in the 50's, 60's, 70's and even the 80's but c'mon you cannot milk that design forever. The Germans need to have some fashion sense. If I am paying over $100G for a car, I want it to look up to date. When they see one on the street, most people can't even tell which year it is or what it is 911, 996, or whatever number they use now!

A 911 will always look timeless, as the design is proven. That is one of their best traits and a very limited number of modern cars can boast a design that will look as good in 5 years as it does today. Not everyone needs a "modern" looking car. For those that do, there are other cars on the market (R8, GTR, to name a few).

Regardless of how one feels about the 911 design, I think most would agree that they would loose significant sales if that changed the look. Better to just come up with another model than risk such a well proven design that many, many people love. Porsche has done this since the 70's (914, 924, 928, 944, 968, Boxster, Cayman) and the 911 design is still hear. That says something.

It's OK that it is evolutionary. There is no need for it to be otherwise! It's a 911!!! It just needs to get better as technology comes along to make it so. The most drastic and needed leap was from the original design that lasted at least a few too many years. The few year revolution from the 964 to the 996 series brought much needed refinement to the car. While I know there are pre-996 purists that would disagree, but the 996 series was, to me, the most pivotal point in 911 history. From there everything has been and should continue to be evolutional.
