Some things never change. Even with its well executed retro design and pricey Australian-derived, rear-drive architecture, the reborn Chevrolet Camaro still finished second to the Ford Mustang in sales in 2009.
Ford sold 66,623 Mustangs. Chevrolet sold 61,618 Camaros. Of course, the Mustang figure includes coupes, convertibles and Shelby GT500s. And bear in mind the 2010 Camaro didn't go on sale until April 2009, giving the refreshed Mustang a head start on sales.
This year the Mustang gets two new engines -- the 305-horsepower 3.7-liter V6 and the 412-hp 5.0-liter V8. Our not especially brave prediction? Even with a full 12 months of Camaro sales, this battle won't even be close in 2010.

You cannot be serious. Is IL going to mention the fact that the Camaro wasnt on sale for the first 3 months? Camaro outsold Mustang for 5 straight months- often by four digit margins. I get that IL likes the Mustang better but lets not manipulate the facts here. Any car that is sold for only 75% of the year is unlikely to top a competitor on sale for 12 months. This is common sense, especially for people who follow the car business- supposedly.

I agree, it won't be close...most of the folks who had to have a Camaro have gotten one.

The Camaro is a nostalgia item. The Mustang has a sustainable market.

And the Camaro has outsold the Mustang month-by-month (almost every month) since it became available mid-year. So the point of this post is.. what, to perk up fans maybe?

I'm not terribly surprised to see the Camaro so close. I think the Mustang will be well ahead in 2010 though.

Good post by 1487! He does make a valid point...
I will say that 2010 the mustang will win. But more valid reasons will be there when full tests of the improved mustangs come along.

So...basically this is really a win for the Comaro. Adding to the 3 extra months Ford had is the fact that practically none of the Comaros were sold to fleets, whereas I can go to Avis or Enterprise right now and take my pick of a selection Mustangs. Also, there were huge discounts on the Mustang.
Yes, as IL happily pointed out, I do think the Mustang will continue to outsell the Comaro because of fleet sales and discounts, but the Comaro will probably do better for GM because fleet sales and discounts wont be needed to move this car. And IL thinks the two new engines will be a game changer? They won't. Everyone buying these cars care more about style than performance- if they didn't, they'd be buying a Nissan 370Z or a used Corvette. So buyers will care more that the Comaro looks gorgeous compared to the somewhat bland mustang, as opposed to the fact that the 6 year old Mustang gets to 60 mph .2 seconds quicker.

Can you explain to me why auto sites are compelled to run this nonstory? Autoblog had the SAME information on its site today as well and failed to mention the Camaro didn't go on sale until March and wasnt widely available until maybe May. The Camaro has outsold the Mustang for 5 straight months and yet IL and AB predict the Mustang will be the runaway winner in 2009. Does that make ANY sense to anyone? I get that the press likes the Mustang better but this is ridiculous. The public likes the Camaro better and the Mustang is only getting within 1200 units a month with big incentives while the Chevy has none to speak of so far. Before December the Mustang was getting crushed in sales- I dont think its cracked 7k units all year while the Camaro has done it several times.
A lot of people are going to have their feelings hurt when the new engines don't make a huge impact on Mustang sales. In addition, Ford hasn't even said when the 2011s go on sale. SUppose its not until June 2010- by that time the Camaro will likely be thousands of units ahead of the Ford.
the trend is in the Camaro's favor and yet almost everyone is in agreement the Mustang will come out on top next year- don't get that one at all.

"The Camaro convertible goes on sale this spring."
Not true, not until 2011.
In addition, all 66k Mustangs sold were not 2010s. The 2010 showed up early this year but 2009s were still available with discounts. My guess is the 2010 Camaro outsold the 2010 Mustang but Ford isnt going to break out 2010 numbers.
If the Camaro averaged 6k units a month it makes no sense to say that the lack of 3 months of sales wouldnt have impacted the race. It also makes no sense to say that 2010 will go in Ford's favor- based on the 2nd half of 2009 its not going to happen- especially if GM matches Ford in the incentive department.

"the trend is in the Camaro's favor"
maybye...but you are the one with the feelings that will be getting hurt because Ford is on its way up and GM STILL CANT TURN IT AROUND. December was not a fluke....it was the result of an economy that is improving and the buying public is wanting a quality car from a car company that was not bailed out and is now owned by the government.......stick your head in the sand but GM failed everybody last year....themselves, the public, bondholders and shareholders and a lot of folks are not forgetting that. I know you say a lot dont care and that is true but a hell of a lot of us do care and it is showing. You cant twist and turn the facts any more.....it was also the worst year for Corvette sales in over 40 years. With the upsurge of Ford sales, the rising tide will lift all Fords including the Mustang and that gives the favorable trend to the Mustang. When GM actually posts some sales increases then you can talk about favorable trends. Oh and why do you care anyway? You dont work for GM so why defend them?....you never answer that question. I could care less about any large corporation, including Ford.....
If you hate this blog and find IL so horrible why do you post here? It cant be from the love and recognition you receive here.

BB:
Spare us the bondholder griping. Its off topic and ridiculous. We understand you lost money in the GM bankruptcy- this isnt the place to vent about that. We are talking about cars, not bondholders losing their shirts. At least I understand why you are so angry and out of control now.
Never said I hate this blog- I do hate pointless commentary from people who have nothing of value to say about cars or the industry however. See if you can read between the lines on that one.
As always your entire post had nothing to do with the topic at hand. For the record Ford gained share for the year and GM gained share in the 4th quarter- both companies are doing better and have a lot of products coming in 2010. As much as it pains you to acknowledge this both will be around for a long time and both probably will be profitable if the US market recovers.
Sorry to hurt your feelings. YOu can get back to off topic ranting about GM failure now.......

Camaro=lots of hype leading into high initial sales. Time will tell where it evens out. What is it...18 months to even out for new car sales?
Mustang buyers are waiting for the new generation car and initial sales will probably trump Camaro's at least for a time.
Its a back-and-forth.
...who cares.

As a Mustang fan and a vintage Mustang owner, I just want to say that none of this bickering matters. ALL that matters is that with any luck I will someday be able to read this article title "Pony Car Comparo: We test the new 2035 Mustang, Challenger, and Camaro" With the first line "The pony car wars that were re-ignited in 2009 have continued unabated for 26 years...."

I don't understand all this hatred between Mustang and Camaro people. Both vehicles are obviously profitable for their respective manufacturers, no matter which one sells better. Secondly, we have two cars here which are both good in their own way and we the buying public have more choices available to us now. So, who cares about this petty bickering?

This guys sums it up beautifully. The auto media has done an about face on the Camaro for no apparent reason and now everyone is CLEARLY rooting for the Mustang. Its a total reversal of what was said when the Camaro debuted earlier this year.
Robert:
I like both cars for the record. The Mustang is too good to hate in my book. I am merely commenting on the unfounded Mustang cheerleading going on here and elsewhere. The post above is totally misleading and very biased.

Camaro had the advantage of having 5 years of pent up mulletheads waiting for the return of their pony car. What happens after they get theirs?
