GMC Granite Image Leaked Ahead of Detroit -- By GM Itself

gmc_concept_tease1.jpg

gmc_concept_tease2.jpg No one in the media had leaked anything about the GMC Granite yet, so General Motors took on the deed by itself. This detail photo was released today on the GM Labs design blog ahead of the Granite's debut next week at the Detroit Auto Show.

GM has described the Granite as an urban utility vehicle concept, which likely means it has all the toughness of a daisy combined with some really clever storage solutions for your smart phone.

Also, based on this computer-drawn silhouette, the Granite is smaller than any current GMC production vehicle, including the Terrain. It's also virtually identical in size and shape to the Scion xB.

So GMC is building us a box-shaped car named after an igneous rock.

So how many crossover wagon like things does GM now sell?

Is GMC gunning for the Flex with this one?

Replace "GMC" with a blue oval in the front and there you have gotten another FMC product. way to go, GM, for copying from your competitor.

Looks quite handsome from the teaser shot.

Is this where GMC—the General's *truck brand* is headed? Into developing mini cars?

This is just one more reason why GMC (the brand) should have been drop-kicked like Saturn, Pontiac, Saab and Hummer. There's no need for two (so-called) truck brands within this corporation. Keep Chevy truck, and boot GMC!

I understand where GM's going with this, but I'm not sure it'll work. GMC is becoming the hip/bling alternative to Chevy's common sense, with the Terrain as the obvious first example. So, Terrain is to Equinox as Granite is to Orlando. And they're trying to scoop up whatever Hummer buyers may have been left, so whoever was pining for an H4 (but not for off-road) could go here. But the small box market (Soul, xB, Cube) is hot now, so I wish GM luck in joining the fray.

YAY! I'm so happy to see us FINALLY using Japanese packaging practices yet staying true to our own (weak) design language! Rule.

"Into developing mini cars?"

How is it a mini car?

I thought it said it was the size of a Scion xB? That's hardly a mini car weighing in over 3000 lbs.

It looks like a demonic Schmoo

Which is hardly a truck—which is what the GMC brand has been about since day one.

Agreed it's no truck and aside from trucks I don't see much need for the "GMC" brand either.

But it's still not a minicar. Maybe a midsized wagon.
