Volkswagen Up! Lite Debuts at 2009 L.A. Auto Show

Yes, Volkswagen trotted out yet another Up! concept today at the L.A. auto show. This time it featured a diesel electric hybrid drivetrain that returns up to 70 mpg, according to Volkswagen.

Like most concepts, it's made of carbon fiber and aluminum to keep weight down and of course has cameras instead of mirrors like virtually every other concept car of the past decade.

In a cringe-inducing bit of stagecraft, Volkswagen of American CEO Stefan Jacoby asked the company's head of product development, Dr. Ulrich Hackenburg, if the Up! Lite might see production.

And Hackenburg's "off the cuff" response? "It uses all the components from our small car platform, so yes it would be possible to build. We are looking at it." So there you have it. -- Ed Hellwig, Lead Senior Editor, Inside Line

I actually think it has a pretty attractive exterior.

All it needs are some giant whiskers for the grill to make it look like a big Hello Kitty car.
