Toyota has moved up the on-sale date for the plug-in version of the third-generation Prius by a whole year. Now the automaker says the plug-in Prius will hit U.S. dealerships in late 2011 instead of late 2012.
Undoubtedly, Toyota is feeling some pressure from the impending late-2010 launch of the Chevrolet Volt, lest the Chevy move in and usurp Toyota's position at the vanguard of the plug-in hybrid movement -- at least so far as public opinion is concerned.
Toyota still plans to bring a trial fleet of 150 Prius plug-ins to the U.S. in 2010, though they'll be leased to government agencies, power companies and corporate fleets.
