Spy Photo: 2012 Hyundai Veloster

veloster-1600.jpg
Remember when we gave you the scoop on the 2012 Hyundai Veloster coupe about six months ago? Well, now what looks to be the first spy photo of a prototype has surfaced. Just look at that sloping roofline and tiny footprint, what else could it be?

Seems about right given that we were told that the production coupe would be "Accent-sized" and come powered by a 1.4-liter four-cylinder with 140-horsepower. Compared to the concept, the only noticeable difference is the addition of a B-pillar compared to the concept's hardtop.

Production is still two years away, so expect to see many more spy shots of the 2012 Hyundai Veloster, or whatever they decide to call it, over the next 24 months.

Is this supposed to be competing with the Volkswagen Sciroccio? I know that's not sold here but I can't think of anything else similar to this on the market.

Personally I can’t stand the looks of the new CRX, this Hyundai’s styling I can only compare to the CRX because they’re both futuristic and ill-proportioned. The Sciroccio I could live with the styling. I’d like to know what the rear window will look like on this Hyundai.

I thought this was a Kia as it has several key Kia design elements in tact.

Looking at the pic, i thought it is a small CUV

The concept and direction is very compelling. Honda used to live in this realm. The king is dead - long live the king!

"Is this supposed to be competing with the Volkswagen Sciroccio?"

I think it'll be smaller than that...I'd guess more of a Mini/Honda CRZ fighter.

It would suit me fine, and I have no problem with the looks. I have fun tossing my '09 Accent hatchback around, with only 110 hp, so this car would only be an improvement. I assume the strong-suit would be the handling, like the current Accent SE, not straight-line acceleration. That said, it should be reasonably quick with 140 hp and 2500 lbs curb weight.

Looks like they took a nice helping of design cues from the GT-R.

Such as the blacked out a pillar and the …... ... I don’t see the GT-R in this design.

If I were Hyundai, I would keep the spy cover on it. Every Hyundai I see on the road is a styling disaster, front to back. Who cares anyways, Korean cars are "trhow-away" cars after the warranty runs out.

Every Hyundai on the road.........yeah, right. Hyundai is probably the most reliable non-premium car brand on the planet. Why would you throw away a reliable car? Isn't "reliability" what kept people from parting with their aging Toyotas? Hyundai is more reliable than Toyota these days, try and keep up.
