Come Memorial Day Weekend, 2010, there will be a new Chevrolet Camaro SS pacing the Indy 500. GM unveiled this orange and white 2010 Camaro pace car today, and it makes its official debut at the Indianapolis Auto Show on December 28.
The color scheme is said to be a reverse visual homage to the 1969 Camaro SS pacecar, which is an odd choice perhaps just one year past the 40th anniversary.
The pace car is a stock Camaro SS just like last year's car, though Chevrolet may offer its special grille insert as an accessory for regular customers. So far as we know, though, there will again be no full-car replica available for purchase.
One interesting change on the new pacecar is the lack of a roof-mounted lightbar; it will be mounted in the rear window instead.
More photos after the jump.

I like the stitching on the interior. But come on Chevy! How much money could you make from the mullet-brigade charging a premium for this ostentatious special edition?
(See, I got the mullet joke out of the way. Please no more.)

At least they kept the decals to a minimum. 20 minutes to remove them with a hair dryer and you can drive it to work without being embarrassed.

The only Indianapolis pace car worth having in my opinion is the 1991 pre production Dodge Viper RT/10 which Carroll Shelby himself drove, every other car just appeal to Nascar fans.

Also... I’m not a Nascar fan so I don’t know if there are any regulations as to what the pace car can be but with how much Nascar relies on sponsors and advertisements why not use movie cars like the next bat-mobile or speed racers Mach 5. Even vintage cars would be nice to see. Such as the Monte Carlo from TOKYO DRIFT, Eleanor mustang, general lee, Bullitt, Ford Torino from Starsky and Hutch, and so on. I know that would get me to watch. Personally I think Nascar car is to regulated to enjoy so this would bring some excitement back for me even though the pace cars wouldn't be racing.

Why would the Indy 500 Pace Car appeal specifically to NASCAR fans?
Also, that grille in the pace car looks so much better the regular SS.

Strictly my ignorance of all things racing, racing has little appeal to me. Now that I know that it’s not involved with Nascar it has even less appeal. Open wheel cars have nothing to offer me but my statement still stands. Pace cars only appeal to spectators and do nothing to draw attention to the company that built it (imo).
