Chevrolet Camaro Z28: Still Coming...Again...For Real

Z28 badge 717.jpg

General Motors is in some danger. No, no, not that whole bankruptcy thing nor the executive bloodbath of the last couple weeks.

No, General Motors is in danger of doing something we didn't think possible: Teasing enthusiasts with the possibility of a supercharged Z28 version of the Camaro so frequently and for so long that people actually lose interest.

We broke the story that the Z28 was back on, after a one-on-one interview with GM design chief  Ed Welburn. Now, in a web chat with the public newly appointed GM President of North America coyly re-confirmed the high-performance model's favored status.

In response to a question about "key products that need to be accelerated," Reuss gave the customary Volt/Cruze answer then added, "I also like Z28's." (We're going to presume he meant to use the plural here and not the possessive).

So there you go...again. It might just be time to build the silly Shelby GT500-fighting 500-hp, body-kitted thing already.

The responsible side of me says:

I'm all for enthusiast based high performance cars but I don't think this is the best time (economical and/or environmental) for a supercharged V8 gas guzzler. Prioritize and take FULL ADVANTAGE of your current situation GM as those investments have proven to keep the lights on.

The irresponsible side of me says:

I think a supercharged V8 is a bit much as a lighter solution(?) could be the 507hp LS7 out of the Z06. Get the driving dynamics down, refine the driver interface and keep the weight as low as possible.
