Brabus GLK V12: 750 Horsepower, 397,000 Euros, But No Quicker than X5 M?

brabusglk_blog.jpg

Brabus claims the GLK V12 is the world's fastest SUV with a top speed of 322 km/h or 200 mph. That carbon fiber lip spoiler on the front of it keeps the front end from lifting at speeds upward of 186 mph, says Brabus. Yet, we notice the press release for this deranged version of the Mercedes-Benz GLK doesn't say quickest.

brabusglk_blog3.jpg Brabus says its SUV, which has a 6.3-liter, twin-turbocharged V12 worth 750 hp and 995 pound-feet of torque, will hit 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.2 seconds.

That's it?

We know a 555-hp BMW X5 M that will do that, and it costs about $90K comfortably equipped. The Brabus GLK? It "starts at 397,000 euros," which comes out to about, you know, $580K and change.

Meh.

I'll take a real sports car, thank you.

I'd say the acceleration numbers are due to lack of traction from a dead start.

At some point there is a limit to how fast you can accelerate on street tires. The $1 million 1,000 hp Veyron is only about a second faster than the X5M.

I would bet that street start and in roll on testing, the Mercedes is faster.

This motor is probably more flexible than the X5 M for effortless passing at over 100 mph. Also, the contrast piping on the seats and the quilted floor coverings are probably much fancier than the X5. Oh, and the Sheik may be more inclined to give you the oil contract if you roll in one of these over the BMW.

Law of diminishing returns, meet the Brabus GLK V12.
