Jay Leno Camaro Brings Twin-Turbo V6 to SEMA

lenocamaro-1600.jpg

Yes, another Jay Leno project car from GM. This time it's a twin-turbo version of the 2010 Camaro V6. Leno says it makes 425 horsepower thanks to the addition of Turbonetics T-3 turbos and an air-to-air intercooler. And who are we to doubt the Great Leno?

Developed as a modern day Z-28 of sorts, this Camaro also sits lower on revised springs and uses a six-piston Brembo brake package. There are also revised front and rear fascias and even functional brake-cooling ducts in the rear quarter panels.

Jay told GM's chief designer Ed Welburn that this is what a new Z-28 should be: lightweight and able to turn. Welburn just smiled and nodded like he always does, so whether this is a hint of things to come is anybody's guess.

Twin-turbocharged V6? He's done it exactly right!

Anybody can make big power from a 6.2 liter "small block". Getting a lowly V6 to make over 100 hp per liter of displacement (118 hp/liter in this case)---now that's sweet! Plus, of course, this also (probably) means the car is lighter than the V8 with better weight distribution to boot!

I don't know; I'm a bit of a skeptic on this one...

How much lighter is the V6 when compared to the V8? What kind of a weight difference is there once you add all the pluming and equipment needed for the turbos? Seeing as how the twin turbo setup didn’t surpass the power of the NA V8, I don’t know if this is the route to go. I’m just not convinced that there is a substantial weight savings when comparing the two; I would like to see some actual numbers for comparison. If we are only talking about 100lbs or less, I would just stick with the V8

I do think that hood is awesome. GM should have gone with that hood design for the SS instead of the mail slot on the bumper.

good points scotty.

Hard to justify the twin-turbo V6 when the V8 is about the same power and undoubtedly cheaper to build.

DI turbo cars seem to produce 0-60 times much better than their HP ratings appear. Just look at the 355hp Taurus SHO. Up to 5.2 seconds to 60 in a 4300+ lb. car. At nearly 600 lbs lighter and with 70 more hp than the Taurus, a twin turbo Camaro should be able to easily best the 0-60 time of the V8 SS. With 100 lbs or so less on the nose than the SS, cornering should improve as well.

All I have to say is - Get RID of those Fisher Price engine covers. Jays engine cover looks the same as green Camaro above it... I want to see the engine and all the plumbing that makes it work.

Kudos on the wheel choice.

All the cool kids are turbo-ing now...

Nice job. The V6 twin turbo sounds like a great idea!
I would love to see edmunds.com do a road test on it! C'mon guys, flash those press credentials and get the keys!

I love sixes too (especially inlines), but in a car like that, I want my V8.

LOL on the Fisher Price engine cover.

Eh, why is this not cool??..a V-6 putting out as much horses as the V-8 SS??..sounds cool, and the EXHAUST OUTLETS are nice!!!..not saying i would buy it, but for something to do with your V-6 Camaro, pretty cool....probably sounds like an IMPORT though???..overall a COOL LOOK..

I think the twin-turbo V-6 is something that they should have done a while ago, even if it wasn't on the Camaro. I don't see why some people frown on this Camaro, if they can get as much power out of a V-6 as they do a V-8. Why shouldn't it be an option?

I think they should keep the V-8, no doubt, just because that engine is amazing and it wouldn't be a Camaro SS if it didn't come with the V-8.

Not to be a fanboy but as the owner of a 2010 2LT RS, I really like the idea of a turbo-six. The front grill and hood vents are killer. And I even love the BBS rims. Very unexpected but they work. I don't know if it should be called a Z-28, to me a Z-28 must have a V-8. This car seems to be going after the import crowd and if it is I think they nailed it.

I think they should evolve the RS package into a genuine performance alternative (different flava) to the SS package not just halo headlights red badging and supposed LED tail lights that are completely indistinguishable from the old school bulbs. It should come with upgraded brakes, suspension and motor via force-feeding. Build it go toe to toe with a 370-Z or 335i for thousands less.
