In a report by Automotive News, Ford CEO Alan Mulally said the company won't bring the Ka minicar to the U.S. He told the trade paper that the Ka is too small for American tastes and the Fiesta will be the smallest car in the lineup.
Mulally also said that the Ranger pickup developed in Australia for world markets won't be sold in the U.S. Ford is expected to end production of the current Ranger in 2011 and there's been no mention of a successor for the compact pickup.

The Fiesta would probably fill the small car slot fine.

I would have thought that a small pickup would be a major part of Ford's US plans. Could it be that they have so thoroughly gutted their R&D budget that they simply can't afford to develop one?

I'd be surprised if Ford didn't have something up it's sleeve concerning the small pickup market. They're just not telling us.

brn, agreed. stephen987, the article neither confirms nor denies that there is a replacement for the US Ranger. I would expect there to be one, but whether it's based off the world Ranger, a modified current Ranger, a shrunken F-150, or an all-new platform... we just don't know yet.

To be honest, I think Ford is making the right decision. Gas prices have been moderate and Ford is already making substantial gains throughout its portfolio. The addition of a sub-sub-compact probably isn't appropriate right now.

No big loss on the Ka but a new Ranger might have a market.

Ford is working on a new Ranger or replacement maybe F-100. See link http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/05/spy-shots-ford-ranger-mule-caught-testing-in-dearborn/
The Ka will be eventually come state side when the Fiat 500 sales soar. If you guys did not know, the Ka is base in the Fiat 500 but with better handling.

Ford Fiesta is too expensive, and the sedan is COMPLETELY FUGLY. I saw the Ka in Europe and it was cuter than a bug's ear and WAY better looking than the Fiesta. The Fiesta isn't too small, it's too ugly! The Ka is the ONLY Ford I would be interested in. Ford marketing wonks are turds. I hope they get the plague! Mulally wanted to bring it over but they shut him down. Too bad, they can keep their crap and I'll buy a FIAT 500, which is WAY better looking and drives decent (I rode in one while in France)
