Top Gear's James May Jumps On Our Ferrari Bandwagon

Ferrari-308.jpg This past Monday Top Gear's James May (That's the slow one with the funny hair.) wrote his column for the Telegraph.co.uk about it being the right time for him and everyone else to run out and buy a Ferrari 308.

"I've decided it's time to be a modernist; time to view motoring in a progressive light, which means, if my contentions of last week are correct, I should have a supercar," wrote May. "Clearly I can't put my name down for a new Ferrari 458 Italia or a Lamborghini Gallardo Balboni, so it will have to be something old with the spirit of a supercar, if not the actual trousers to live up to the name these days."

"And after quite a bit of thought I've settled on the GRP-bodied Ferrari 308."

And we agree with every word. Trouble is, Mr. May is more than a year late with this revelation. You see Inside Line bought a 308 during the summer of 2007 and we drove it, loved it and reported on it for 12 months. In fact, that's me in the photo enjoying our 1984 308 QV on the famed Mulholland Hwy.

So Mr. May, please get off of our bandwagon. Or at least give us a shout out.

Any proposals on the next used performance car?

My choices:

~ 97-99 Acura NSX-T (just as long as it's a 3.2L car)
~ 01-03 C5 Corvette Z06
~ 93-98 Toyota Supra Turbo (6MT)
~ 02-03 Mustang Cobra 6MT
~ 01-03 BMW M5 6MT
~ 04-05 Cadillac CTS-V 6MT
~ 01-05 Honda S2000

IL doesn't have a spell checker.

I agree with another classic sports car. I agree with HA4's list, too. An old luxury car (ie, 80's Mercedes) would be awesome, too.

I happened to see a 308 cruising around town the other day. It may have a hard time keeping up with a 5.0 Mustang (and a modern V6 Camry), but it sure sounds like a proper old-school supercar. And I've got to say that even though the design dates back to 1975, it still looks great today.

If Captain Slow wants to buy this week (and take advantage of the good exchange rates), there's a really nice 1977 GRP-bodied 308 on eBay with a Buy It Now of $49,900. At today's rate that's about GBP30,300.

You know, all of the problems and idiosyncrasies aside, the 308 is one beautiful piece of machinery. Mmm-mmm-mmmmmmm.

My guess is he hasn't even heard of your web site. There are countless car oriented sites on the web and most people around the world don't pay all that much attention to what happens on the North American car scene.

Instead of a 308, the later 328 seems a better car, with the larger and more powerful engine and miscellaneous other improvements. Probably wouldn't be much extra money either.
