Spy Photos: Toyota FT-86 On the Nurburgring

At the 2009 Tokyo Auto Show, this car will be officially called the Toyota FT-86 Concept. But as you can see here, there's a production version already in development.

The chopped up Subaru body helps to conceal the final design, but we don't expect it to change much from the concept coupe. With rear-wheel drive, a low-mounted boxer engine and an extremely small overall size, the FT-86 promises serious performance for the entry-level buyer. More pics from the Nurburgring after the break.

The car appears to be riding on STI (not the STI car, but STI brand) wheels.

Nice, it looks like the low mounted boxer has been pushed back the platform to improve the weight distribution.

I wonder if the rumored Subaru version will have AWD, thats if they can find a way to fit drive shafts to the front wheels, now that the boxer engine has been moved back.

I wonder if this is Subaru's version of the FT-86? 7tune.com posted a article today that has a rendering of Subaru's version and information that says an STi version will be coming and more than likely it will have the bigger 2.5 boxer engine in it. Plus it will more than likely get the STi upgrades like wider fenders and a rear trunk wing (which i see in these photos). Hmmmmm........

I'll hold out for the Subaru version. They seem to be a little more consistent with performance engineering.

I hope that overhang doesn't make it to production.

This isn't nearly as important as the content of the vehicle, but I was curious about the "FT-86" name for the concept. There's little to say that the name will be carried over to any production version of the car, but I was wondering where the name came from. I'm thinking just combined initials of the two companies: Fuji and Toyota? No clue about the 86. Maybe just project number.

Anyhow, I'll be following the development of the vehicle closely. It's finally something from the Toyota camp that I'm interested in.

@flicmod

Back in the '80s Toyota offered a Corolla Levin and Toyota Sprinter Trueno, that was highly acclaimed for it's fun-like driving characteristics. It was internally code named the AE86. It's speculated that "FT" stands for "Future Toyota."

I know the seemingly high trunk is just a camo trick but no matter how low it will be in the production form the car's shape is very unpleasant and ugly.

If the FT-86 ends up with Subaru's boxer engines, it'll sell like hotcakes.

estreka,

According to some reports, the FT-86 (or whatever the production version is called) might end up with a direct injection "D-4S" version of the Subaru boxer engine.

Hopefully this is not even close to how it's going to look like. Subaru can't design nice-looking anything. How can they justify to share the OK but still bland interior of a $20,000 Forester with the $37,000 WRX STI? When I test drove the STI, the biggest turn off was that I felt like I was driving my wife's Forester. Please, don't make such stupid mistakes with the ToyoBaru.

Thanks for the info, Bob! Since I don't remember much of the 80's, I wasn't aware of some of the names that they threw around back then. I'm familiar with the Trueno Sprinter and such, but not the "FT" names.

Thanks again.
