We're not really sure if Mercedes-Benz is gong to revert back to the S-Class coupe name just yet, but it seems logical given the switch already made on the E-Class. Regardless of what's it's called, this revised version of the current CL coupe will only get the most minor of exterior updates.
Changes like new headlight clusters, revised taillights and new electronics on the inside are probably the extent of the changes on this midcycle refresh. With that in mind, expect to see this car arrive with only minimal fanfare sometime early next year.

A coupe with two doors?! How innovative!

Yawn... Another 'innovative' over-priced automobile from MB.
Mercedes is over-rated... Lousy handling, poor reliability (especially electronics) and cheap looking interior materials...
Also, my dislike preference: that huge & UGLY (definitely UN-Cool) analog clock INSIDE the dashboard... Who wants to look at the clock all the time...?
For that much money, better go with Porsche or BMW.

why does mercedes need this? they dont. the newest cl is already big and unfathomably gorgeous in the metal. this would have the same engines (maybe add a deisel?) and compete for the same customers. cut this car in half and make a real bmw 1-series competitor instead.

^^^ Read the text, folks. This isn't a new vehicle for MB; it's just the updated CL (perhaps to be renamed the S-class coupe).

Yaaaawn!! The C-Class offers way too little space for the money paid, the E-Class is all angles and creases - and the end result is not a visual pleaser, the S-Class is a bit boring!
Hopes MB brings back the elegance of previous years!!
I love the CLK 63 AMG Black Series though and the C63 AMG! :D both those cars bring a grin to my face whenever i think of 'em!

"why does mercedes need this? they dont"
It's obvious that some of you clearly don't understand what the upper end of the luxury market is about. In Mercedes Benz's case, they've earned enough respect and recognition that they CAN offer these ultra expensive, ultra exclusive, low volume luxury vehicles in addition to their core and more mainstream products. Luxury isn't about logic, its about a varied and fully customizable set of offerings and options that CAN be had if you have enough coin. The CL is no exception. To be honest, Id say that most luxury manufacturers like Acura, Cadillac, Lincoln, Infiniti and to some extent Lexus would kill to have the ability to sell a larger range of niche vehicles that are in line or higher than the CL.
The CL coupe above isn't a new version of the big coupe as it's simply a refreshed version of the current.

HAHA. The first 2 people in this thread are not all that bright. First of all, the CL has been lauded for its interior materials, as with the S-class.
Secondly....the S-class coupe and the CL are the SAME THING. ITS A NAME CHANGE.

OK commenters, if you wouldn't buy this MB with your own money, would you pick it up if someone else was getting the tab?

sorry, honestly didnt even read the text where it said c-class coupe and cl are the same thing. but when i think s-class i think massive luxury car. when i think cl i think of something that actually can have some moves and is sporty. "s-class" and "sporty" dont really work for me. benz cars arent really my thing but stick with the cl name and update the rear a little bit and it's a winner. i'm not really fond of the new led strips in the fog light area

I Loved the current CL except for it's transmission stalk - on the wheel, ew, no, wrong. If I'm paying $90,000+ then I want everything to be in the right place. I know they put the nav controls there, but Hyundai can do it right in the Genesis, so can Mercedes not do it? Did they get stumped?
And I agree with the whole philosophy of "different strokes for different folks". If I had my own company I'd fill my model range with as much as I could. Like Hyundai and Toyota, just add a real 4x4 to Hyundai (aka Kia Borrego) and some sports and convertible to Toyota (A camry Solara doesn't count in either respect).

@isend2c-
There were three primary reasons for going with the column-mounted shifter. The first was the obvious fact that it is a totally electronic setup with no mechanical connection, thus the shifter could have gone absolutely anywhere and was least obtrusive on the column (the fact that BMW made it work on the 7-Series was also clearly a driving force). Secondly, not having a console mounted shifter allowed the COMAND controls to be placed further forward than in cars like the Audi A8 or Hyundai Genesis. This leads to better ergonomics because you aren't contorting your arm to use the knob(and as much I like the A8 and Genesis in both cases the knobs are too far back on the console to operate really comortably for me). Lastly, it opened up space for real cupholders. The S-Class is perhaps the only European car on the market that can accomodate a Big Gulp.
Having said all that, even after nearly 4 years of living with an S550 I still don't like having the shifter on the column. :)

The CL is an elegant coupe thats refined (CL 550 or 600) or a brute CL 63 or 65 either way they blow the doors off a BMW 6 series or the aging 911 which has had the same shape since i was 5 in 1974! and looks like a VW Beetle. By the way Girls drive C&E class coupes and Men drive CL'S.
