Pricing Released on MkVI 2010 Volkswagen GTI, Golf TDI

Volkswagen released pricing today on the Scirocco-faced 2010 Volkswagen GTI and Golf. As we've written, the Mk6 generation of the VW Golf and GTI do not represent a full-on redesign. Rather, Volkswagen set about to make them simpler and cheaper to manufacturer, while making small refinements here and there.

Notably, the 2010 VW GTI adds only $60 to its base price ($23,990 with destination); however, Bluetooth is a mandatory option ($199) on all U.S.-bound GTIs, so effectively, the base price for a 2-door GTI with the conventional 6-speed manual gearbox is $24,189. Add $600 if you want a four-door GTI. Add another $1,100 for the DSG automated, twin-clutch transmission.2010-vw-golf-tdi.jpg

Bluetooth is also mandatory on the new 2010 Volkswagen Golf TDI, also available with two or four doors, and also available with the regular 6-speed manual or the DSG. Like the Jetta TDI, the sophisticated 2.0-liter diesel four makes 140 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. Still, we'd like something sportier like, say, the Euro-spec VW Golf GTD.

Pricing on the 2010 Golf TDI ranges from $22,690 for a 2-door 6-speed to $24,390 for a 4-door DSG. But remember to add another $199 for mandatory hands-free peace of mind.

Doesn't the 2010 Golf TDI get a sports suspension by default and how does it compare with the GTD?

Kind of stinks that the Bluetooth option is $200.

@ questionlp: Indeed, you are right, standard "sport" suspension on the Golf TDI. Maybe I'll like it better than our long-term 2009 Jetta TDI. -- Erin Riches

I like the improvements but I prefer the old GTI's face.

Seriously - standard sport suspension on Golf TDI? That was one reason I stayed away from the Jetta TDI. Sounds good!

The one notable MISSING feature from the 2010 GTI is standard HID low beams. So, really, the price hike is much greater than $60 (not even considering the mandatory bluetooth option).

@eriches,

I would really like to see how it compares to the Jetta TDI. While I would like the trunk space of the Jetta TDI, but the Golf TDI appeals to me a bit more.

Although I have always been indifferent to diesel, this one will be tough to ignore; the Jetta TDI looks all dowdy and boring, but this one -although not a GTD- is looks promising.

I still want the GTD as well. That, or a MINI diesel, or a BMW 123d, or even any of the smaller 3-series diesels. Call me crazy, but I think that a small but performance oriented Euro diesel would sell very well here.

You'd get a Mazdaspeed 3 for around $24k .... can't argue with 280hp and 280lbft at less than $25,000! :)

Yes you can. MS3 is now terribly ugly and with torque steer galore. MS3=boy racer, GTI is more refined but not as hard edged. Depends on what your prioties are I guess.

Would like to wait for the GTI R20; but, I think it may be quite expensive.

The Mazdaspeed 3 looks great on paper. Really great. But good lordy is it fugly. Seriously looks like a 13 yr old kid designed the exterior. They went a little overboard in my opinion. I'm sure it drives like a dream, but it looks like a nightmare.

Golf TDI test drive is in my future. No GTD = big sales for chip companies! Pricing seems a couple grand high to me (nicely trimmed 4 door for $22k seemed more sensible than the $24-25k I'm looking at). But they probably wont be able to keep them on the lot at that price - so I can't blame VW. They are in business to make money after all.

@nealibob

You're crazy. :) But I would buy one.
